Students at Copper Hills elementary encircled the school with a giant "peace ribbon" as Utah Soviet Awareness Week was observed at several Granite District schools. The observance was part of a pilot program aimed at increasing understanding with the Soviet officials here and with their country, said Ray Kartchner, social studies teacher leader for the district. The initial effort is being funded by the Utah Endowment for the Humanities and, if successful, will be expanded to include all district schools, he noted. WELCOME TO THE FIRST West Lake Students Find Social Dancing Is Fun WEST VALLEY. Students at West Lake junior high are learning to trip the light fantastic and developing social skills as they participate in a social dance class taught by Doug Mather. The semester class is an elective and can be used towards an art credit required for high school graduation, the teacher noted. The class has been very popular over the past few years, he observed and there are 120 ninth grade students involved this year. Mather teaches current modem dances including the Wiggle Disco (or free style) but also involves his students in the more traditional dances, some with new names he invented such as the Foxxy, (Fox Trot) which fits todays ballads and slow music very well he said, and the Rock Cha (Cha Cha.) Students also do the New York Hustle, Latin Hustle, Swing and Jitterbug, (a top favorite) and the Waltz. Mather also teaches a few country western dances. Stu- - Dr. Huron Polnoc, - dents, he says, "are not really big that type of music. Their parents may be, but the kids prefer the Top 40," and that is the music he uses in all his dances, tunes from the Top 40. "Its not so much the dances but the music that makes the difference," he said. Students love the Charleston, he noted, "and that goes back to the 20s." Costumes are created and the students the school by represent performing their floor show at community events. Climaxing the program is a dance assembly presented at the school in May each year when students perform their floor show numbers for their fellow students.
