Some 500 invited guests from at home and abroad were on hand for the ceremonies, wining and dining and a tour of the newly completed facilities. Also given reason to celebrate Friday were the 2100 Utah employees. Frank Joklik, BPMA president and CEO, announced that a bonus would be paid to each employee, reportedly in the of $2000. Joklik neighborhood said it was the employees who made it possible for the work to be completed on time and on budget. Several spokesmen for the firm indicated that the completion of the modernization project brings Kennecott to the forefront of world copper producers. One called it the spokesman "heavyweight champion of the world" among copper producers. The Bingham Canyon ore body, widely recognized as the best in this country, is expected to provide continued employment and economic gain for the area for at least another 30 years. The modernization project began in February of 1986 and took 33 months to build by a construction force that peaked in late 1987 at 1100. Kennecott now employees a permanent force of 2100 and will annually produce 200.000 tons of refined copper, 300.000 ounces of gold, and significant amounts of other saleable byproducts. Another client, who was a college president, fraternity learned the fatal consequences of and and driving drinking arranged for buses to drive students home from a canyon Christmas party he had planned. A new law passed during the last legislative session requires DUI offenders to listen to a victims account of how his life has been affected by a drunk drivers mistakes along with the DUI sessions, "We have to instill in people that drinking and driving are no longer acceptable in society," said Sieverts. "People need to be educated from kindergarten up create and positive peer pressure." about the The publicity of drank driving consequences will decrease the number of drunk drivers for a short term, said Odell, but historically it doesnt last. As soon as the publicity decreases the DUI offenses increase and everything is back to normal. "Make cars that wont run," said Odell. He explained an idea for a car that was considered as a possibility to keep drunks from starting the car. When the key is put in the ignition a flash of numbers comes up in a sequence and the driver is required to put the numbers back in a reverse sequence before the car would start. However, some drunks were able to do it. Impaired driving is not always determined by the blood alcohol level because some people are competent to drive, explained Odell. "If they dont have the coordination necessary to operate a video game, they shouldnt be driving," Odell added. Sieverts said some states have bumper stickers or a sticker on the license plate stating that they are an offender. This way you could know if the driver in the car next to you has a driver license. "The stigma it creates is more effective than simply taking the license away," said Sieverts. "All this takes time," the both agreed. eye-han- 968-384- 4.
