Law Enforcement Class To ChangeName At Utech WoodbadgeGoal Attained GRANGER. Earning a set of Woodbadge beads in the scouting program may seem simple for men and just a bit more difficult for many women. But for Thelka Woodbury, a victim of rheumatoid arthritis the past 35 years, it represents a triumph of will power over pain, and a golden capstone to her 34 years in the scouting program. Mrs. Woodbury, involved in the Boy Scout program since 1953, a year before she even had a son, has remained active in spite of all her children being grown. One of only two women in Granger District 13 to earn the Woodbadge beads, Thelka participated in the intensive training of scouting and leadership skills, which involved seven days and six nights in camp learning iiow to tie knots, cook mess and work as a patrol. The instruction began at 5:30 a.m. and ended at 11 oclock at night, and although she laughingly warned the men that they might have to help her get out of her sleeping bag in the morning, she always managed to make it to breakfast each day. She received her Woodbadge award on the evening of her 62nd birthday. That same night she was the recipient of another award for a womens training at Camp Maple Dale which involved two days and nights of instruction, only this time 50 Competed she slept in the lodge. In addition, she has earned the On My Honor award given by the LDS church, spent 31 years in the LDS Primary program and for the past two years has been public relations director for her district. She publishes a newsletter each month about whats going on in the scouting world. It is distributed at the monthly round table sessions. Betty Sudbury was selected for the most beautiful hat. Ella Burrell had the oldest chapeau which had been made in 1852 and been the property of her family for four generations. Hannah Madills entry was the prettiest and the entry of Nona Olsen, the most colorful. Lee Orton (the one male contestant to win) had the most unique head gear, which included a toy wheelbarrow. Judges for the contest were Brenda Forrester of the Salt Lake County Division of Aging and Elsie Robbins. Upcoming activities for the center include a presentation by the Magna elementary Music Makers tomorrow (Friday) under the direction of Robin Bennett. On the 29th at 11:15 Woodbury, who is also scouting coordinator in her ward, for a the eighth year has served as chairman for the district in charge of booths and ticket sales. The Great Salt Lake Council had 700 booths in the Salt Palace and the a was judged the largest in the United States. I am proud to say that I had a part in making it a success, Thelka said. When her children were small, the family often went camping, but she no longer finds pleasure in that form of entertainment, although she did sleep on the ground during the training. In response to a query of how she managed to keep active, when a lesser person would have turned their face to the wall and withdrawn from the world, becaue of the pain that is her constant companion, Thelka said, You have to do something. If you just sit back and worry about it. you will only hurt more. Anyway, it is better to wear out than to rust out, and I like keepScout-O-Ram- Seout-O-Ram- e TAYLORSVILLE.
