Show THE GREEN SHEET 2B Thursday, April 23, 1987 West Lake High Honor Roll Released VICA Members Clean Up KEARNS. Lending a helping hand is becoming a habit with members of the Kearns high VICA club, and students are finding it as much fun as work. Student leaders in VICA decided they wanted to participate in service projects, and, when teachers had a career ladder day, spent time putting up signs in the school asking interested students to sign up for work projects. Members of the various clubs and organizations signed up, and students spent time working m three homes in the area to assist elderly people with needed chores, explained Elaine Burrows, COPE director at the school. Last week, Mrs. Burrows received a call from an area resident enquiring about hiring one or more students to assist with yard work, since her husband was to undergo cancer surgery. VICA students volunteered to do the necessary work without charge, said Mrs. Burrows. While working in the persons yard last Thursday, they were seen by neighbors who also needed help and called to ask her who the industrious youngsters were, and if they were available for help. The students are now set to take care of work for both families, and will also paint a home in the area as a project for the schools pride week next month. The people receiving assistance are elderly, widowed or ill, said Mrs. Burrows, and are most grateful for the help. RAKE . . . Steve Morris (left) and Jerry Gibson worked up a sweat while working on the Ernsten yard Friday. Students plan to return when the growing season begins and keep the lawns trimmed, she noted. Two local fast food outlets, seeing what students were doing, got into the act by donating chicken and pizza for their lunch, she added. One good turn deserves another, and usually gets it.
