At one time or another, we all get to the end of our rope and we begin to question the meaning of our existence. Whey you get to that point, maybe the following will help: Desiderata (That which is to be desired) Go placidly amid the noise and the haste and rememoer what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truths quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and you may become bitter or vain, for always there will be greater or lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for on the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nur ture stength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome be gentle with yourself, and whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore, be at peace with God, and whatever your labors or aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its shame, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. Bernadette Library Td the editor, To the editor: On Jan. 26, was disappointed to hear about the decision by the Salt Lake County Planning Commission to deny continuance of a use permit to the operators of the Red Wagon. In my opinion, the Red Wagon is one of the most exciting business concepts to emerge in many years, and to see it join the ranks of other businesses that must struggle with various government restrictions is sad. to say the least. It is especially disappointing to see this happen in Utah, where on a state level we are trying earnestly to retain all the businesses we can after the devastating losses in our key industries. I cannot understand why our county government deems it necessary at this critical time to resist the efforts of a new business to establish itself, regardless of the size or aesthetic value of that business. Many of the small businesses in our community are fighting for their survival. After the normal difficulties a start-ubusiness must face and the stifling regulations imposed by the federal government, why does Salt Lake County feel compelled to further limit new business development? A relaxing of government restraints on businesses would seem more appropriate at this time. We need to realize that it is businesses like Red Wagon that pay much of our taxes, that supply most of the jobs and that otherwise promote a strong economy. I shudder to think of what might happen in our country (or even just in Salt Lake County) if enough Red Wagons are forced out of business, not by lack of consumer demand, but by lack of government support. I feel we need to let the county commissioners know that citizens support the Red Wagon, and other small businesses like it, and we would like to see our public officials work to strengthen business efforts in our community. I p Kevin R. Stott West Valley City the Salt Lake County Library Foundation accepted a donated parcel of land on behaif of the Magna community of 2.08 acres of land from Kennecott at 8650 W. 2700 South for the specified purpose of establishing a new branch library. This site location and acquisition was sought by the council after the results of a thoroughly documented site selection process which revealed this site to be as accessible as possible to the greatest number of users. The single most important decision in a community planning a new library is the site upon which the library is constructed. The site decision is also of the greatest political concern, which arises from the fact that some people in town are experts, including Craig Taylor, on where a library should be located. Many times their expertise is only a mask for or a neighborhood convenience, under the guise of being centrally located geographically in the community and, therefore, lack the understanding of the role of a public library location in that a public library should be accessible to the greatest nubmer of users and not only to a specific segment of users. Mr. Taylor took it upon himself to go counter to the decision made by the majority of the council. He wrote a letter to the people of his neighborhood, representing himself as a member of the Magna Community Council, but was expressing himself as a private citizen. This 1987 self-intere- neighborhood is the same that promoted a neighborhood neighborhood park to be built on the Mt. Rider rodeo grounds which would have been supported by a special service district which would have been paid for by the tax payers. These are also the same people who tried to form a Lake Ridge council for residents east of 8400 West. This has to be seen as a deliberate attempt to split Magna into east and west factions. McDermaid President, Magna Community Council Half Full? To the editor, From the tone of the letter written by Diane Hansen last week, it would seem that she hasnt lived in this area for any length of time. If she had, she would be looking at the old part of Magna in a very different way, because where she sees a cup half empty, I see a cup half full. It is true that the historical part of the community is no longer a commercial hub, but it still remains the municipal hub of the community with the Magna Water Company, the new fire station, the Senior Citizen Center, the Magna Masonic Temple, the Steelworkers Hall, a drug store, the liquor store, a furniture store, the local newspaper office, the Magna Lions club, Garfield Credit Assn, and the Standard Market all located there. While she focuses on taverns, I focus on the fact that five of the seven schools in this area are within walking distance of the 8650 W. 2700 South library site. And she forgot to mention that the new library will be built next door to the Open Door Baptist Church Bible School. not opposing constructive that was better Magna, everything was nominated for her effort as Vera Claythorne in Ten Little Indians at Cyprus. I sense, with growing concern, an attitutude on the part of some of the new residents here that anything west of 8400 West is less than desirable. However, nothing could be further form the truth. The older part of Magna has a long and colorful history that this community can be proud of and such an elitist attitude has no place in determining a library site. While Ms. Hansen apparently sees only decay in the west side of the community, I envision good things happening there through efforts of the Redevelopment Agency. No, it will never be the same Magna that most of the long time residents remember, but it doesnt have to deteriorate into warehouses and light industry as some people have suggested. No matter where the library is situated, there will still be people who will have to drive to reach it, and although it would be nice if everyone could have it in their own back yard, it isnt practical. However, residents of the area west of 8400 West have every bit as much right to have their property values enhanced by having a first class, free standing library located there as those to the east do. It is time that we all started pulling together to create a better Magna if we ever expect to have anything decent out here. LaRee H. As far as the tailings pond is concerned, it is something that can be seen from any part of the community, even the southeast area where she apparently lives. And you dont build libraries on busy streets where people take their lives in their hands just crossing the road. No community can afford to just throw away a viable part of its past. And it is totally Impractical to propose building a library in the bedroom part of the community. In addition, Ms. Hansen offers no donated alternative site for the structure that meets all the qualifications of the matrix analysis that was used to select the site that has been accepted by the Library Foundation.
