Show 2 Thursday, December THE GREEN SHEET 18, 1986 Granite Adds Wins Over South, WJ Pre-Leag- ue GRANITE PARK. Coach Charley won two games this past week, beating West at home on Friday and Jordan South Tuesay afternoon at South. In the West Jordan game, Coach Whitings team was in control the whole way and he was especially pleased with his teams balanced attack with four players in double figures led by John Moses with 16, including four three pointers; Gary Trost and Adam Jensen both had 15 and Kelly Peterson 14. Coach Whiting said, Eric Richards, who had been injured all week, came in and controlled the ball game for us. Granite led by 33 to 21 at the half and stayed ahead by 10 to 15 points most of the game and then in the fourth quarter due to the balance the team showed increased the lead to the final margin. Another big factor in the win was Granites outstanding rebounding with Frost having 15 boards and Jensen 12. West Jordan had a balance in their scoring, Troy LaChance with 13, Guy Fowlkes 9, Kevin Draper 9, Curtis George and Wayne Funk with 8 each. Coach Dan Cowan felt that Granite broke well and shot a high percentage. He was also concerned about the loss of Travis Jessop to an ankle injury and said that Jessop might be out for about 3 weeks. In the South game, Granite took an lead and were ahead at the early and led by 16 at the quarter half. At one time in the third quarter. Granite was ahead by 29 but according to Coach Whiting, South is very explosive and just kept coming back. One of the keys to the game, according to Coach Whiting, was the play of 67 center Gary Trost, who had 28 points and dominated play inside. They didnt key on him, Whiting said, and he was almost impossible to stop. Whitings Granite Farmers Jimmy Soto lead South with region play, Coach Whiting said that 19 he thinks points. 71-5- 2 Cottonwood and Taylorsville will be the top two, but he feels that his own Granite team is the best one he has had. They are the same kids as last year, but have the extra experience and are playing well as a team. Nobody, he added, should look past Granite. Granite is now 4 and 1 in the preleague and will next play against Woods Cross on Friday, January 2 at 7:30 at home and will then open region play at Kearns on Tuesday, Jan. 6. When asked how he felt about 77-5- 2 Pirates Second In Hoop Tourney pensate against a tall team and other things against a quick team, but w'e have trouble against teams that have both. Viewmont 72, Cyprus 66 42-3- 49 According to Cyprus coach Mark the Pirates were hurt by the Vikings size Inside and their shooting and quickness outside, a combination Cyprus has trouble matching up well against. A series of Pirate misques and four block shots by Viewmont helped the Vikes get off to a big early lead. Viewmont led by as much as 20 points in the second half. Cyprus kept cutting it back to 10 or 12, but that was as close as the Pirates ever 21-1- 1 Elder Cyprus scored on its first nine trips down the floor and led all the way, finishing the first period up by eight and the first half by 10, The margin grew to double that in the third quarter as the Pirates began to pull away. All five Cyprus starters scored in double figures, led by Mike Nunley with 23 and Dea with 21. Lamb, Bobby Croyle and Freeman each ended up with 10 points. Freeman was 6x6 at the free throw line. Cyprus shot 53 percent from the field to the Bees 34 percent and beat Box Elder on the boards Lamb and Nunley each had 10 rebounds. We felt going in that, if we could win one of two games in the tournament, wed be doing pretty well, noted Wilson. Youd like to be able to at least win half of your road games. With Jordan looked the game tied at to have a steal, but as quickly as the Diggers took it way, they threw it back surrendering the ball to Hillcrest. Peterson took the pass and banked it home, leaving two seconds on the clock. Jordan had one shot left and almost made it, tossing the ball the length of the floor to Crookstan who fired from the baseline at the buzzer. The shot bounced off the back of the rim. The game was close all the way, Jordan earned a one point maragin, at the end of the first quarter, and Hillcrest returning the favor at the close of the second, dropping a shot in at the buzzer to move in front 61-6- 15-1- 32-3- The lead changed several times in the third quarter, Hillcrest leading at one point then Jordan edging in front The period ended with In the final the Huskies on top period, Jordan turned the tables to earn a advantage, but couldnt hold it. Down the wire, I thought our press rattled them just a bit, commented coach Margetts, after they handled it well early on. In a close game like that, a single mistake can cost you a game and I was proud of the way our kids hung in there. Berrett, who had four three point shots on the night, led Hillcrests scoring with 22 points, while Peterson was right behind at 20. McLeish had 11 and Drew Johnson eight. Peterson added 10 rebounds. The Huskies were 23x49 from the field and 13x18 at the line. For Jordan, Andrew Pond finished with 18 points followed by Crookstan with 13, Jason Kokola with 12 and Tim Brimhall with 11. Jordan hit oi) three and went 8x11 at the free throw line. I checked with the officials stated Jordan coach Hal later, Hale, and they confirmed that had Crookstans shot had gone in it at the buzzer it wouldve counted. Its a tough way to lose a game, especially after the kids had played so hard. three-pointe- rs THANK YOU We would Iiki to thank you lor participating in our voluntary pay program.
