Since pleading once wrote a column for new state license plates, I owe a pat on the back to those responsible for them. I cant wait to get mine. Never mind that the shiney new red, white and blue plates may look out of place on my clunker. I cant afford a new car, but Ill fork over the $12 or so for the new I plates. Obviously, Im not the only one who feels that way, because Ive seen new plates on vehicles that no one in their right mind would have Theres never been a better time to take paid out good money to create a change in owner situation, which automatically means new plates. And no, I dont ski. But like every taxpaying citizen should, I appreciate what the ski industry means to this state and I have no home a Curtis Mathes Console, Stereo or VCR! problem seeing it featured on the plates. The writer had two major objections. One was that many (possibly even most ) Utahns dont ski and shouldnt have to have that downhill racer featured on their license plates. stereo tuner with aux. inputs. He felt that the logo, The Greatest Snow On Earth was misleading. Colorados is better, he insisted. Though how hed know that if he doesnt ski, 1 11 never know. Then he suggested that some might think we are proclaiming ourselves as the cocaine capital of the world. Come On. He suggested that there should be a variety of choices of plates so that an automobile owner could pick the one that best suited his fancy. After all, he reasoned, Utah has other attractions, national parks, fishing, hiking, adnauseum. Thankfully, our state fathers seem to have resisted the suggestion. If not, dont tell anyone and well all pretend that it was. At least we can hold our heads up when we go out of state. We no longer have to pretend that we come from a generic state with nothing to proclaim pride in. Why I used to tell people that there were so many things to take pride in here that we just couldnt possibly choose which one to feature, so we selected the generic route. I must say that I feel Ski Utah and Greatest Snow On Earth is just a little classier than Famous Potatoes. I'll be the first to admit that though I was one of those who complained about the old plates, I had no suggestions for improving them beyond adding some color or using the rainbow effect that California has adopted. So, while Im admitting things, Ill say that somebody knew how to put a little class in something as simple as a license plate. I for one am glad they did.
