The opening number and the treatment of Ya Gotta Have Heart showed some fine direction, along with a host of other scenes. Gaye Mansfield assembled a superb orchestra for the production and there was some entertaining choreography, which was also the responsibility of the director. Gordon Olsons set was not only effective, it was very functional. The partial scene on each flat was an excellent idea. There was a lot of attention to detail that goes in to making a successful production and all those who were responsible for the show should be congratulated. Although Mrs. Brough was able to make something out of nothing, it does not seem quite fair that she should be called upon to do so in the future. The school administration its priorities. A should school musical is a tradition that should not be allowed to die and the incredible amount of work that was required to pull off this production under some very difficult circumstances is not something that can be counted on every year. Kearns high has a brilliant track record in the arts, dating back to the schools earliest days. A community needs that from its school. It cannot happen without support, both from school personnel and the patrons. Julie Brough spent the summer and early fall trying to KEARNS. make chicken soup out of feathers. She succeeded admirably. When an administrative budget cut made it impossible for Kearns high to produce a musical in the schools very fine auditorium, Mrs. Brough set about seeking a solution. She chose to use the school's little-use- d outdoor amphitheater to produce Damn Yankees! It was a good choice. The easy choice would have been to bag the program. But for the 25 young people who participated in the show, along with a very talented orchestra and the support staff, that would have indeed been a bad choice. Not two minutes after the lights dimmed for the last time Tuesday, the rains came. Thats the kind of season it was for Brough's crew of thespians and production staff. The show was extremely Characterization was crisp and in many cases absolutely delightful. Although the ranks were thin, the show worked well in the more intimate setting. There were also some excellent individual performances. Outstanding among those was Lana Furgason as Meg. She handled the age factor to perfection, has an excellent singing voice and seemed to be the glue that held the show together. Jon Lorenc turned in a fine performance as Joe Hardy. Although it was an intense effort, he had the flair for comedy when needed most - in the scene with Lola. Stephanae Stevenson was well cast as the sultry Lola. She had the right touch of seductiveness without overdoing it. James Bangerters Mr. Applegate was entertaining, especially his handling of the special effects and his facial expression. Shauna Callahan was effective and very believable as Gloria. Rima Clark and Nastasha Dunham were absolutely delightful as Sister and Doris and Norman Clark was solid as Joe Boyd. Board members said the petition would be helpful in requesting money in the 1986 budget for a feasibility study on a future golf course in the area. County Commissioner Tom Shimizu said the Dimple Dell area is one of two or three sites which would be reviewed in such a study. The commission also reviewed the idea of using flood retention basins as future park areas. This concept has been successfully used in towns like Sandy for several years. Since areas must be purchased and set aside for floods anyway, the county is considering putting in extra money and using the space for park areas. Terry Baker of the County Flood Control Department suggested four possible flood retention basins as future park sites.
