Mr. Gourley served the past four years as assistant principal at Brockbank junior high. KEARNS KAPERS received a bachelors degree in biological science and secondary education from Utah State University, and a masters in educational psychology from the University of Utah. He also attended Brigham Young University, where he received an educational specialist degree in education administration and is presently working toward a doctorate. He and his wife Nancy have five children, Janae, David, Daniel, Scott and Camille. Born in American Fork, he graduated from Bingham high, SALT LAKE. A University of Utah linguist is surveying Utah speech to see if it offers insight in to how the English language is changing. Marianna Di Paolo is the principal investigator for the Intermountain Language Survey, made possible through a gift by a private donor. Di Paolo will look at how language differs between sex, socioeconomic and ethnic groups, including differences in Mormon and speech. My overall aim is to see what kind of language change is going on in the Intermountain region and how it may predit what is happening to American usage in general, she says. Because younger age groups tend to reflect where language is headed, Di Paolo will first interview teenagers in the Salt Lake Valley. Shell look for changes in grammar, phrases and pronunciation. Friday night we are having what we call the Hello Cougars, Goodbye Summer stomp. This begins at 8 and lasts until 11. The cost will be $2 with activity card and $3 without. That time of the year is quickly approaching when everyone gets involved in the activities. Homecoming week is scheduled for Sept. Beginning with many new and exciting activites, commencing with a parade on the 26th and the suspense-fille- d homecoming game against Taylorsville. In the speech of girls you can see what the standard of language will be in the next generation. Di Paolo says that studies have already shown language differences between men and women in vocabulary, pronunciation, phrases, inflection and pitch. Those differences begin as early as preschool. In communities like Utah where sex roles are more defined, the differences in language between men and women will be more pronounced, she says. Some linguists had predicted that the influence of television with its uniform speech would make American speech more homogenized. But Di Paolo says that has not happened and language differences are becoming more pronounced. Language is a way of expressing who we are," says Di Paolo. We use language as a badge to show with which group we identify. The student body officers would like to thank Mr. Johnston for changing the theme since nobody seemed to care too much about last years apathy problem. One last thanks goes to the senior class officers, the junior class officers and the sophomore committee led by Richard Jenkins.
