Coach Doug douBills unveiled the ble wing offense here Friday after- - noon and it worked well enough to lead his Taylorsville team to a 6 victory over a determined Murray squad. Both 14-- teams had their impressive moments in the contest and both coaches had a lot of praise for the other team. Taylorsville will move right into, league play tomorrow (Friday), hosting a fine Cyprus team at 4 p.m. in what should be a dandy. Murray e will get two more chances to hone its skills, but both are extremely tough contests. The d Spartans will host a 4A Bonneville squad tomorrow, also at 4 oclock. The Murray defense would bend against the Warriors, but did not break very often and Coach Dale Pehrson was pleased with the way his team responded to the challenge pre-leag- pre-leagu- highly-regarde- presented by the Taylorsville of- fense. The Warriors proved to be tough defensively too, yielding only one touchdown. stand and subseIt was a goal-lin- e e Murray mistake quent that finally turned the contest. first-gam- While Murray was unable to sustain an offense in the first half, the Spartans showed marked improvement in the second and on their first possesion moved the ball down inside the Warrior three. Taylorsville refused to yield the touchdown on a fourth-dow- n play, but the Spartans were just as stubborn when the Warriors went on offense. Punting from deep in his own end Warrior signal caller Ryan Brown booted the ball well, and the Spartan return man decided against fielding the ball. It took a Taylorsville bounce to the Murray 28, getting the Warriors out of a mazone, jor jam. On the next Taylorsville possesion the Warriors were able to score their second touchdown on a Brown to Rick Arnold completion to go up 14-Taylorsville had scored with 17 seconds left in the first half on a four-yar- d pass to Kevin Newby after Brown had hooked up with Dave Trevino for Greg Wayman added the PAT on that one, Shawn Jones on the second Warrior score. Murray scored in the fourth period on a drive capped off John Weston to Tim by a Blackham completion. A try for two on the PAT failed. Pehrson felt that his defense had to spend too much time on the field, but was pleased with the overall effort, noting that many of the Spartan mistakes were the result of effort . Murray finished with 99 yards passing and 60 rushing with Cody Littlefield the leading rusher. Blackham, Terry Jackson and Danny Davenport were the key receivers. d Farmer Field Goal Nips East GRANITE PARK. Though head coach Mark Nielson felt his Granite high football team couldve posted a few more points against East Friday night, he was certainly more than willing to take the 10-- 7 victory. After, notching an early touchdown, Granite was tied at 7 in the second half and needed a field goal from Nelson Caceres in the final four minutes to put the game away. We played pretty well for our first game, Nielson stated later. We had several other chances to score, but penalties and turnovers killed those opportunities. On the fourth play of the game, Granites Shane Smith galloped 61 yards for an apparent touchdown, only to have the run called back on a clipping penalty. Twice, fumbles halted promising Farmer drives inside the East 15. 7-- UGH! . . . Murrays Tim Blackham takas a hard hit from a Taylorsvilla dafandar during action Friday aftarnoon on tha Warrior turf. Bulldog Defense Pulls One Out SALT LAKE. A little bit of luck and a whole lot of defensive prowess lifted Judge Memorial to a 6 victory over American Fork as John Colosimo launched his career as head mentor at his alma mater Friday night. Colosimo, who handled the Judge defense for several years as an assistant, saw his charges run up over 225 yards of offense in the first half, but the team could not translate that into points. The second half was an entirely different ball game, with Judge losing three fumbles and forcing the defense to prove its mettle with three goal-lin- e stands. On two occasions, AF missed field goals and on the third, a fourth down play was stopped. The Bulldogs will be looking for more points as they travel to Fruita, Colo, for a night contest tomorrow (Friday). Judge will wrap up preleague play next week in the annual battle of the neighborhood at 7-- East. Colosimo said he would again use two quarterbacks in Fridays test before settling on a starter. The second try resulted in the touchdown and the score remained until the 7-- 0 third period when American Fork took the kickoff and marched downfield, scoring on a reverse play from the three. The Cavemen went for the conversion and succeeded on a pass play, but a procedure flag wiped out the play and the ensuing PAT kickw as missed, leaving the remainder of the games heroics up to the Bulldog defense. Pazell and Bobby Bracken picked off passes and Dan Jimenez had two of four Judge sacks on the evening. Meles stats were 10x16 for 148 yards in one half of play. Chris Aeilo was the leading ground gainer with 62 on just five carries. Cameron Kersey carried three times for 20 yards. Defensive standouts include Marco Biljanic and Pazell along with Bill Batt. Player of the game honors went to two-poi- linemen Mike Cafarelli and Jimenez, Mele for offense, Pazell as the back of the week and Batt as defensive player of the game. Colosimo, as can be expected, was delighted with the defensive effort and not really displeased with the offensive execution.
