Show 3C THE GREEN SHEET New Publication Will Help Thursday, April 11, 1985 - IPs The Season To Plant Trees, The 'Right' Ones MURRAY. Selecting the right tree can save future dollars in damage to home and property, according to Murray City Forester Gary Merrill. Arbor Day arrives April 26, he said, and many homeowners are thinking about planting trees to beautify their yards and add to the value of their homes. Choosing the right tree for the right place, he can forestall future hazards noted, to your home and family, as well as conflicts with power lines. Insect and disease problems can also be foreseen. A new tree guide for the area is available to help make those decisions, Merrill pointed out. Written by W. Readers will find tree selections made easier because performance and use of 100 common and recommended trees are carefully and graphically explained. Its a well documented and valuable book, Merrill says. I consider it an invaluable tool to help select the right species of tree. Published by the Cooperative Extension Service of Utah State University, the book is designed specifically to fit Intermountain area needs. Most previous books of this type were adapted from experience in the eastern and far western states, occasionally giving information which was incorrect. Nineteen local plant professionals evaluated 261 tree varieties and, from these results, 85 were selected as highly suitable for various intermountain uses. The project steer-in- g Utahs Largest Selection of Storm Doors nurserymen selected an additional 15 varieties to round out the books 100 recommended trees. Through using this book, Merrill explained, homeowners can gain insight through professional advice to select trees for planting on most residential lots. Some examples cited in the book are: the English Oak, which is a magnificent, large, semi-formtree which can be a wise selection for parks, but not for small residential lots. the Hedge Maple is an attractive, medium sized formal tree not often used, but well suited as a street, park, lawn or windbreak al tree. the Kwanzan Japanese Flowering Cherry is a small formal tree ideally suited for streets, parks and lawns. It can also be striking as a single specimen or massed in rows or drifts. Horticulturists at Utah State University have some timely tips to help gardeners get the best produce for the time and money they invest in their gardens. Bill Varga, USU research horticulturist, cautions gardeners who have saved seed from last years garden that its genetically highly improbable that such seed will yield the same bumper crop as a year ago. Seed companies, he said, remove the variability in seed production. Alvin Hamson, USU extension horticulturist, has listed a number of recommended seed varieties in his popular exension publication, Growing Vegetables: Recommended Varieties For Utah, EC 313, available through county extension offices. (The publication is currently being updated.) Not only does the publication list seed varieties, it lists the number of days from lanting to harvest, germination temperatures, average planting dates (which vary around the state), the length of a row that will yield typical needs for a family of five, the number of seeds per foot of row, the number of plants or amount of seed needed, planting depth and plant spacing. Varga says local garden stores are the best places to look for the seeds you want. However, some seeds must be ordered, and he lists several companies, YOUR TRUE VALUE STORE .1 ESP exterior help. No matter how good the seeds are, they will not bear their maximum yield without properly fertilized soil, according to the USU specialists. Utah soils are usually deficient in mrutest) fspeefiy JMhks RatLato JKaPciU nitrogen and phosphorus. Hamson recommends that gardeners apply three pounds of fertilizer, or the equivalent, for each 100 square feet of garden. Spread half the fertilizer before plowing and work the other half into the top three inches of after plowing. soil Hamson offers several other tips that can help make this years garden a success: - - Plant only a few feet of a row at one time if planting lettuce, peas, radishes and other crops that rapidly overmature at harvest time. - - Plant an early, semi-earln and late varietyof com at the same time to spread the harvest period. - - Keep space occupied. When early crops are gone, make second seedings or plant vegetables, such as snap beans, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, sweet corn, kohlrabi, summer squash and Swiss chard. - - Control weeds early. An hour spent hoeing small weeds will save hours of work later when weeds are mid-seaso- mature. Control insects when they first appear. - - V Latex Redwood Slain leaves a flat finish on wood without hiding the natural texture.
