An adjacent home has been purchased and will be remodeled, so more children of Utah Tech students can be accommodated in the center. Further down the road, with approval of bonding by the State Legislature for remodeling of the College Center (student union building), an architect will be selected and plans drawn up for an additional level to this facility. Existing pressure on meeting rooms, catering and banquet areas, student services, etc, make enlargement of the College Center vital. Repayment of bonds will be accommodated through an increase of student fees already agreed upon by student officers, and e from other tax dollars. During the fall quarter, too, the Salt Lake Skills Center is planning to move to its new location in the former Jordan Middle School at approximately 10th West and 6th South in Salt Lake City. Remodeling is under way and the new area will allow, also, for additional classes sponsored through Utah Techs School of Continuing Education. Dr. 0. D. Carnahan, president of the 9,000 student college, says, while we are immensely proud of the strides we have made since my appointment here in 1980, I can assure you it is but a drop in the bucket to what is coming in the years ahead. In the matter of student population alone, we are looking toward 20,000 students attending the college by the turn of the century. And frankly, we think that may be an underestimate. Exactly 20 years ago we had a fall quarter enrollment of 839. Even when I came we had only 5,937 students. We project the need for at least an additional one million square feet of building space over and beyond what we now have available. Currently, we occupy a little under ' XStm FIRST ON CAMPUS . . . Each of the schools of the college (currently, Trades and Industry, Technology and General Education, Business, and Continuing Education) are planning controlled expansion into new subject areas. But it is the School of Continuing Education that will be carrying the brunt of diversity of class offerings, as well as variety of locations where classes may be held. non-stat- In the past year, Dr. Carnahan says, we have established the Sandy campus which is becoming accepted in that community. We are also holding classes at the International Center on a regular basis, as well as downtown and, when requested, at individual companies locations. I fully expect that within the year we will have created a satellite operation for convenience of residents on the east side of the city. And it wont be too far ahead before we provide our brand of practical classwork in Park City and Tooele, too. Some continuing ed classes may also be held in our Woods Cross facility, in which we teach the avia tion operations from downtown Salt Lake. Enrollment since then has mushroomed. The viability of the associate of science degree, approved by the 1985 State Legislature, means that more programs can be expected in the near future with that option attached. In the past, all faculty have been known as instructors, Dr. Lowe says. This has worked to our detriment, both as to funding for faculty salaries and in terms of relationships and under- - standing by the world of academe at iarge. In the future, faculty will be ranked as instructors, assistant professors, associate professors, or full professors. The next step is to try to find ways to strengthen the economy in a number of places in the valley, he said. Dispersion of income generating facilities once property is developed is a goal and there will possibly be other (redevelopment) areas in the future, he said.
