A little more than a decade ago the west end of Mdgna was on the downhill skids. Buildings were being vacated and windows boarded up, as what was once a thriving co mmercial part of the town came to a grinding halt, It wasnt a depression that Skeptics claimed that the old part of Magna was dead and just waiting to be buried. ' . : brought about the change. It was a change in attitudes and traffic patterns that choked off the vital life force. In 1970 the area was a bustling, active thoroughfare that seemed as though it would go on forever. However, when Huffaker Furniture closed its doors on May 1, 1973, followed in quick succession by the Best Shop in January of 1974 and Zions Bank in May that same year, the picture took on a different hue. In Magna hav 2700 SOUTH . . . This triggered a move to the east by other merchants, which, in turn, resulted in a creeping decay that threatened to engulf what was left of the old part of town. With the closure of Huffakers, Paulos Auto bought the historic building that had once housed the Lindsay and Rowsell Store, converting it into a garage for heavy duty truck repair. But the operation was short lived because by 1977, another strange twist of fate caused Paulos Auto to move its operation to Granger. Then Utah Power and Light moved east in 1980. Since then, mother nature, father time and vandalism have all taken their toll. Windows were broken, metal rusted and grass and weeds took over the asphalt area around the buildings. Skeptics claimed that the old part of Magna was dead and just waiting to be buried. However, in the last few months, there have been signs of life that indicate it is still alive and well. In the old Huffaker building, Hercules Inc. has a long term lease to use it as a record center for storage of inactive files, which are housed in cardboard containers on steel shelv- have purchased 1 acres of land, plus 16,000 square feet of building, where they intend to set up an automobile repair service. It will specialize in German cars including Volkswagen Rabbits, Cheroks, Audi and BMWs. Stevens said there is still a lot of renovating to do, including painting, glass replacement and lighting. He also said they still had to bring the building up to code to comply with current fire standards and to install visual barriers for esthetic purposes. Depending on the weather, they should be in operation by March. Instead of specializing in clothing to cover bodies, the old Best Shop building has been turned into The Body Shop (not to be confused with the Magna Body Shop), where men, women and children are involved in a physical fitness program. It is operated by Vickie Christison. There are dance classes offering tap, jazz, ballet and break dancing, in addition to tumbling, aerobics and a beauty shop. The Zions Bank building now has a clothing manufacturing firm in residence. J. R. Apparel, selling both wholesale and retail clothing, is expected to be open to the public within two weeks. According to Gordon Young, superintendent of office services, the storage is necessary to protect Hercules interests by keeping records for varying lengths of time depending on government requirements and corporate needs.
