While the total number of cases worked by the Police Department decreased from 12,388 to 12,164 (all figures through October), some crimes have increased. Police say kidnappings have gone up from 12 last year to 17 this year and that forcible rape has increased by two, from 17 to 19. Burglary is down considerably, from 997 to 792. as is larcenytheft (excluding motor vehicles), from to 2,566. However, motor 2,823 Vehicles are a more popular target this season, up seven from 283 to 290. Arson also increases slightly, up two from last years 25, and assaults also increased, going from 115 to 127. There have been six fatalities on West Valley City streets so far this year, the same number as last year. The most likely place for an automobile accident is in the proximity of 3500 So. 4000 West. The most likely reason is improper lookout. Nearly as bad is the intersection at 3500 So. Redwood Road and for the same reason improper lookout. Police are also writing more tickets this year. Last year 8,606 were written through October; this year, 9,052. Total motor vehicle accidents has also increased dramatically. Last year there were 3,370 accidents investigated. So far this year there most caused by have been 4,399 failure to yield the right of way or speeding. Among adults, police have made 13 arrests for rape; five for robbery; 61 for assault; 47 for burglary; 268 for larcenytheft; 30 for motor vehicle theft and eight for arson. Police also arrested juveniles for their share of the reported crimes. The arrests include three for forcible rape; four for robbery; 31 for assault; 75 burglary; 448 for larcenytheft; 39 for motor vehicle theft, five for arson. ATTEST: Ludell P.
