Engineers from the Utah Department of Transportation are concerned that a new process used to repair bridge decks along the Wasatch Front might not be working as intended. New pavement that has been applied to bridge decks between Pages Lane and Lagoon on Interstate 15 in Davis County this summer has begun to show displacement in spots. Core samples taken from the deck show the fabric installed in the pavement has not adhered to the asphalt. UDOT crews are removing a test section of the deck to evaluate why the process did not meet expec- - UDOT engineers stress that the structural integrity of the bridges is not in question. They are safe. The problem involves only the pavement on the bridge decks. The fabric was part of a new process designed to seal out moisture and prevent corrosion in the reinforcing steel in the bridges concrete deck. Preliminary core samples from some of the bridge decks indicate that the fabric is not bonding to the asphalt. If the fabric tears under stress, water could then trickle through the membrane and into the reinforcing steel, causing potholes. Original plans called for using the fabric on 112 bridge decks scheduled for work this summer and next construction season. The bridge decks are in Salt Lake, Davis, Weber and Utah counties. So far, 38 decks have been partially or wholly sealed in the new waterproofing process. Work on other bridge decks scheduled for completion this construction season will proceed, utilizing a method that has been used with success in the past while the new process is further analyzed. 24-ho- West Valley 3620 S. 2700 W. 4090 W. 3500 S.
