Show Kearns Area Residents Plagued With Sand KEARNS. Utahns have been faced with too much water in their earth this spring, now some residents here are faced with too much earth in their water. A few area residents have complained they have been plagued with sand in their culinary water during the past few weeks and Taylorsville-Bennio- n Improvement District is attempting to solve the problem. The main area affected by the sand is three streets in Kearns -Lander Way, Salem Avenue and Twilight Drive - located around 4400 West and 5900 South. Area residents say the problem has lasted about two weeks, with most of the sand coming in the past few days. Were at our wits end out here, said resident Michael Burgoyne. Theres sand everywhere and its been going on for a couple of weeks. The residents say the sand has been clogging washing machines and jamming water meters and sprinklers. It comes out of the faucets, making bathing and getting a glass of water free of sand difficult, according to some of them. The residents initially contended that the improvement district was doing little to correct the problem. Burgoyne said he had called the district repeatedly, but the sand continued to flow. In the past few days, however, residents say the District has been putting forth considerable effort to correct the problem. The sand problem is still there, but homeowners feel like the district is trying to do something, according to one resident. Some homes were without water Tuesday night as crews worked until Thursday, June 28, WEST VALLEY VIEW 5 Crews Working To Flush It Out 1984 In Drinking Water after midnight on the project, residents said. The sand comes from a variety of sources, according to Floyd Nielsen, improvement district manager. One cause is that new wells often take five to 10 years to clear, and they sometimes cave in, getting into the pipes. During the winter, the sand lies dormant because water use is minimal. But in the spring, when people start watering their lawns, the water use goes up and the sand is often swept into residential water lines, according to Nielsen. One of the biggest problems with battling the sand is that it is very It (the elusive, Nielsen noted. sand) moves on you during the day, Nielsen said. If a couple of schools water at night, the sand can shift to another spot. In an effort to clear the lines, the improvement district has been flushing water out through hydrants since Friday. We hate to do it, because we lose a lot of water, but we have to. Were going to waste a lot of water, Nielsen said. Another step being taken, according to Nielsen, is to put $30,000 into a well in Kearns. Filters and screens are being installed to make sure sand doesnt enter the drinking water. No health risks are associated with the sand, Nielsen said. Weve taken samples and dont feel any health problem exists. Were continuing to monitor the situation, Nielsen said. One problem is that we cant see underground or in the pipes to check the situation out. Nielsen said the district should have 'the problem taken care of within the next few days.
