Show V' 2 Thursday, June 2, WEST VALLEY VIEW "All Us 1983 Heussers Are Tough1 He Says Tickets On Sale - For Women's An OT Ballplayer n Boxer, by Mike Gorrell MURRAY. When Del Heusser was a kid, he was scrappy, a street fighter. He snuck through a hole in the mens restroom to get into the Jack Dempsey-JiFlynn fight here in 1919. Barely made it in time to see Dempsey get laid on his back in 28 seconds. He hasnt lost any of that spunk in the 64 years that have passed. At 77, hes still as feisty as ever. Even though his fingers have been mangled by arthritis, Del still plays a game of pool now and then at his favorite watering hole, Lous Tavern on west 4800 South. He watches games on television, Heusser family blood for four generations now, passed from Dels dad on through to his grandson Sam. Boxing was in the blood, too. But like that sports presence in Murray, it faded long ago. Del was the last of the fighters. Like a lot of kids, he got his start on the streets. He and his friend Jackie Gordon would get into fights all the time walking home from school. He made money at it. It seems that Del was in his early teens when he and Kenny Parkinson got into a fight in front of Hoffmans Butcher Shop, just as workers at the Murray smelter were getting off shift. The Italians got off shift and come down and formed a circle around us, tossing in money and cheering. Did he win? I licked him. I licked Kenny. If hes still alive, hell admit it. He won his first regular professional bout as well, arranged by a local promoter, Kid Davis. For a fourth-roun- d knockout, he received maybe even placing a small wager or two. He tells stories - like the about some of the Dempsey one athletic feats hes seen (or heard about) through most of the 20th century. And he has some stories. The Del Heusser story is, in itself, a reflection on sports history in Murray. It reflects a rich heritage in the game of baseball, which at the turn of the century had roots as deeply entrenched here as it does today. It also recalls memories of a bygone era when Murray was a hotbed for boxing, a sport now confined to periodic appearances at the Boys and Girls club. Baseball has been part of the - Fastpitch Meet Dels As Feisty As Ever $2.50. The boxing business wasnt always that kind to Del Heusser. His dad, Jimmy, was a boxer, too. Just who will play whom hasnt been settled, at least it hadnt before a league meeting last night (Wednesday). Details of that meeting were not available at press time. The status of Skyline - whether was that area will have a team causing most of the difficulty in drawing up a schedule, said Valley League official Bob Burkett. If Skyline doesnt play, as was originally suspected, the league will have two, divisions (east and west). But if efforts succeed to put a Skyline team together, then Skyline will be placed in the East Division, while Judge, which is returning to American Legion play after several years out of the running, will be shifted to the West Division Other than that problem area, the league looks fairly well set. There is some uncertainty about the head coaching position at Bingham, but that is not considered to be a major problem because of the talent Bingham has. Only a few coaching changes were made during the The most notable was the replacement of Joe Castillo at Hillcrest by a former star of that club, Bob Keyes; he will be assisted by Ray Varoz, father of the current standout, Brett. Ernie went on to play some minor league ball, but his career flowed away in a bottle of booze after he lost control of a pitch and killed a batter. Del played some ball too, but being a family man he had to work. So he played in the amateur leagues around town, did a little coaching and watched his younger brother Ed make it to the big leagues, a veteran who was Dizzy Deans roommate on the 1935 St. Louis Cardinals. ' And he passed on the family baseball genes to his son Jim, now a Murray barber but at one time a promising player whose career was interrupted by the Korean War; and a daughter, Bonnie, a fastpitch soft-baplayer who hit the big time with Parichys Bloomer Girls in Toledo. The line didnt end there. Jims son Sam is a ballplayer, too, one with a most unusual distinction. Hes probably the first returned Mormon missionary to play baseball for a Catholic college in Spokane, needed more money for the move. Hed caught a cold some time earlier, but against doctors orders agreed to fight Jack Knight in the Old Trocadero Dance Hall, then located north of what is now City Hall. He fought, and lost. Made less than $10. Didnt get beat up bad, but it was his last fight. He came home, went to bed, and died shortly thereafter of pneumonia. Del swears the fight did him in. Still, Del fought his share of fights, even after hed married Verda Williams of Midvale, now his wife of 58 years. She eventually coaxed him into quitting, but not before hed fought 34 bouts. Verda didnt dislike baseball, but she didnt know much about it until she met Del. After that she didnt have a choice but to learn. Baseball was a Heusser sport. Dels dad, besides being a boxer, was a catcher. His uncle Ernie was a pitcher. At one time the Murray team was made up of Ernie and Lenny and Jimmy and Henny and Bert. Five Heusser brothers. It was Ernie and Jimmy who led Murray to a state championship in 1910, bringing home a silver trophy thats now one of Dels prized possessions. tm-FR- I.
