Show V" "1 west VALLEY view SAYS SHE I never couldve been a I wasn't always a quaking mass of fear at the thought of a shot. comes to needles, I As a baby and even a small child, I took my shots bravely. Until I had my third polio shot. I swear that nurse stood back xtremely feet and tossed a dart at me. Pain shot through my arm and for several hours, I was sure that the limb was suffering from the dreaded disease the inoculation was supposed to prevent. I survived, of course. But for many years I absolutely refused to have another shot. And I never have had another in the arm. I courageous. I quivered with fear when my 10 junior prom date pinned a fxl corsage on my shoulder.a ..Given choice, Id have selected one of those choked down more nasty medicines and endured illnesses for far longer than was necessary because of my fears. Any chance of my becoming a drug addict was stifled by that one incident. I nearly passed out in a college biology class when we had to type our blood. And not from the sight of the blood. As a teen-ageupon learning wrist jobs. As a BYU freshman, I had to sign a whole lot of papers absolving the university of any responsibility for my contacting various diseases as a result of my refusal to have shots. I couldnt exactly claim that shots were against my religion. But they were definitely against my better judgement. r, before the surgery. I refused. After all, why should I let that nurse give me a shot to help me sleep when we both knew she was going to wake me up half a dozen times to make sure blood still circulated through my veins at that a blood test was a requirement for marriage, I vowed never to marry. Hmmm, I wonder. make the Cowardly Lion look e- . . Of course, the time came when I got my comeuppance. In my early twenties (mine, not the). the correct pressure. But there was no refusing one the next morning. Forced into the hospital for minor surgery, the first thing they did was drain a vial of blood from my arm. Despite the fact that I told them I already knew what type of blood I have. And that I was absolutely certain it was free of disease. I turned my face away from the procedure and was quite shocked to discover that it was relatively painless. Marriage became a more attractive option then. Obviously to no avail. There were more indignities to come, however. They tried to insist that I have a shot to help me sleep the night That one was designed to help put me out for the operation. Turn over, said the nurse in a voice that indicated argument was out of the question. I obeyed. Then waited. And waited. Uh, could you give me that shot, I inquired. Honey, I already did, she responded with the hint of a twinkle in her voice. Good grief. And I hadnt even felt it. Which is why a couple of years later I surprised my doctors nurse by insisting that a prescribed shot be administered in my derriere. She gladly complied. This should not be interpreted to mean that I became suddenly brave. If theres a way to avoid a shot, I do so. In any portion of my anatomy. But my experience did give me enough bravery to donate blood. Once. And I actually survived the experience. Without scars or an tional breakdown. emo- I come face to face with my cowardliness almost daily. Hanging on my roommates wall is a certificate indicating that she has donated four gallons - yes, gallons - of blood to the Red Cross. Myself, Ive donated exactly one pint. Largely because I can hardly bear the sensation of that needle seeking out my vein. Admittedly, its not painful. Every eight weeks or so Janet and Craig go off to the blood center. Janet can tell some horror stories about what she goes through as they search for her vein. It makes my stomach do flips just thinking about it. I went once to donate a second pint, but it was on a Wednesday and the combination of what hap pens around the office on that day and my own fear caused them to reject me on the grounds that my blood pressure was too high. A check under less stressful conditions indicated near normalcy, but since that time, its provided a most convenient excuse to decline to accompany them to the blood center. So until I meet up with a wizard or theres a crying need for my blood type -- 1 guess I just have to live with the fact that Im a coward. It is nice to know that if the critical need was ever there, I could probably live through the experience. I think. - Richard Davidson, 3880 W. Benview Ave. David R. Golden, 3854 Tangiers Cir.
