A group of fifth grade students from South Kearns elementary are completing work on hand puppets they will use to present the puppet show The Green Demons. Fourteen students are involved in the project. They will present their show at Crossroads Mall next week in conjunction with National Consumer Education Week, said teacher Nadine McDaniel. The puppets offer consumers a warning to be careful to check things out and to be sure of what they are buying before making a purchase, she explained. A bid for work on the first phase of Woodledge park is expected to be awarded here tonight ( Thursday ). City Manager John Newman recommended to the City Council Tuesday that a $59,511 contract be awarded to Workman Construction for installation of piping and rough grading work at Woodledge, 5210 W. 4310 South. Woodledge is primarily a flood control basin which will double as a city park. Plans currently call for a large open area with tennis courts and picnic and play areas. Workman submitted the lowest of seven bids on the project. The highest was $135,179. In addition to the base total, City Public Works Director Glenn Weaver also recommended the council approve a 10 percent overrun contingency (the authenticity of which would need to be verified) and a $1,000 engineering fee. The contractor will have 50 working days to complete the project, Weaver noted. The council is expected to award the bid at its 6 p.m. session. Quorum Presidencies Are Reorganized in Granger East Stake GRANGER. Three elders quorum presidencies in Granger East stake have been changed. Robert Fiack is president of the quorum in the Granger 7th ward, having served as first counselor. Elevated from second to first counselor was Richard Terry. Don Houchen was sustained second counselor. In the 6th ward, Kevin Likes was released as first counselor to Wayne Rapp. Former second counselor Steve Miner was named first counselor and Dale Thorne is the new second counselor.
