It was a critical week for the Murray boys basketball team. The 64-6- couldnt have Spartans FARMER ( responded any better. Not only did the Spartans rally in the second half to knock off West 0 Friday, but they also did something which few clubs have been able to do in years - they beat Judge on the Bulldog court, Tuesday. That boosted Coach Mike Evanss club into a tie with the Bulldogs for third place in the region. Murrays a far sight record now stands at better than anything it has done in the past three years. Were getting it together. And its a good time to do it, said Evans after the Judge win. Were not doing anything tricky. Everybody knows our inbounds n plays, knows we play defense, knows our offense. If we do it well, though, nobody can stop us. Neither West nor Judge could. And the Panthers are the quickest team in the region while Judge always is renowned for its tough defense. Judge Coach Jim Yerkovich, whose club also beat South 8 this week, was complimentary. As usual, the toughest competition will come from perennial champion Brighton, out for its sixth straight state title. The last squad other than Brighton to win the 4A title was Ptaschinski's 1977 Olympus crew. The Bengals qualified only nine wrestlers for state this year, but eight of them are region champs. Brighton won all six titles between 98 and 132 pounds, plus 167 and 185. From the north, Layton, Sky View and Viewmont are expected to be the top challengers for team honors. Hillcrest also is expected to fare , well. In the individual competition Thursday, Granites Wayne Burr 4 won the 98 pound title with an decision over Olys Steve Whitney. Skyline's Chris W'hitney made up for his namesakes loss by pinning Grangers Dino Rivera at the 2:49 mark of their match. The next two weights belonged completely to Cyprus. In a dual meet last week, Farmer Kevin Herbert beat Grangers Ron It was a hard-fougTew match. This time around, however, the win belonged to Tew. But it, too, was a hard-fougmatch. The pair battled on even terms for three rounds before Tew won the decision in overtime by the slimmest of margins, The third Cyprus wrestler to take home individual honors was Lyle Silcox. He breezed through his weight class, winning the title with a major decision over Granites David Clark. Unlike Watson, Hola usually wins finals, he by pins. Theyre playing better defense than any Murray team in Spartans, Judge Girls To Battle On Court Today MURRAY. The battle for second place in the Region Six girls basketball race probably will be decided here today (Thursday). Murray and Judge will vie for the runner-u- p spot behind West, which has effectively sewn up the league championship, in a 3 p.m. contest on the Spartan court. Coach John Colosimos Bulldogs currently hold second place with a 2 5 win record following their Thursday over South. Murray is in third with a mark after losing 0 to West on Friday. A Judge victory would virtually secure second place for that squad. A Murray win would thrust Coach Becky Andersons team right back into the chase. The Bulldogs won the 7 d on a first meeting shot. rally Judge cut short a second-hal- f and used a balanced attack to beat South. Things simply got worse for South in the second half, despite foul problems for the visiting Bulldogs. Yerkovich saw his team slip to a station where it could finish fourth in the league. Center Dan Frazier sparked the Spartan surge and scored five of his nine field goals in the final period. He hit jumpers from the top of the key and drove effectively as well. Still, Judge was within striking distance in the final minutes when it was forced to foul. Mike Simpson, who had sat out much of the second half, hit two critical tosses with just under a minute left. Earlier, John Johnson, not known for his free throw shooting ability, hit the front end of a to help hold the pair of lead. Rick Bentz, Blake Soffe and Keith Chapman all added important charity tosses in the final canto. While Murray received balanced scoring behind Frazier (19), Keith Chapman (15) and Soffe (12), Judge n was virtually a show. Senior forward Greg Diedrich did it all for the Bulldogs, hitting for 32 points on 12 field goals and 8x8 from the line. He also pulled down 15 rebounds. Evans, for one, was impressed. I have a lot of respect for him. There was nothing cheap about his points. He earned them all.
