Dur- ing the first week that this city provided animal control services, a dozen incidents of dog bites were investigated. Of the 12 incidents, only one involved a dog with a rabies shot, said city ordinance enforcement officer Ed Clontz. The lack of disease prevention evident in that statistic has prompted animal control officers to push a drive for city residents to license their animals with West Valley City. Dogs cannot be licensed if they have not received rabies shots. Unlicensed dogs will be impounded, said an animal control department spokesman. Having a dog impounded can become expensive for the animals owners, far more than having the animals licensed in the first place, the spokesman said. Licenses for spayed dogs with rabies shots may be purchased for $5. Those for unspayed dogs with shots are $10. After March 31, the cost goes up to $15, unless the animal has been newly purchased. After May 31, the fee climbs to $20. By contrast, persons whose dogs are impounded must pay $15 in advance for the rabies shots. The animals are held for 10 days for observation by the Humane Society, at a For Week American Viewpoints cost of $3 per day, the spokesman said. Complaints about deg problems have been fielded in large numbers by the citys animal control department, but the requests for licenses are far less frequent, Clontz noted. Out of about 300 calls in the first 10 days of animal control work, 117 required some form of At the same action. time, only 10 licenses were sold. Following television reports last week about the condition of a herd of horses in the Redwood area, the department was flooded with calls from residents concerned about those animals n Legion Offers Filled Agenda KEARNS.
