Show 7 WEST VALLEY VIEW Thursday, Jan. 22, . 1981 Bankers Offer Criticism Check TAYLORSVILLE. Amendments are being prepared to proposed on legislation guaranteeing checks, the topic of a talk and discussion during a West Valley Area Chamber of Commerce meeting here Thursday. State Sen. E. Verl Asay (Dist. 11) of Taylorsville said yesterday (Wednesday) that he anticipates the amendments to be ready for a committee meeting at the State Capitol on Monday morning. Acknowledging that in its original form, Senate Bill 52 was too strong a bill, the senator said he is working with the Utah Retail Grocers Assn, on Aired Bill the amendments. Sen. Asay said it is his intention to alter the in original proposal such a way so as to place no great burden on either the retail stores or the banks, while still lessening the problem of bad checks. During last weeks Chamber meeting, SB 52 came under heavy attack from an audience dotted with persons financial representing institutions. Introducing the topic was Fred Ferguson, loss control director for Maceys and Bobcos, grocery store chains. Noting that financial losses to store owners have been stagger ing, Ferguson observed that with current unstable economic conditions, merchants have been cautious against intimidating customers who pay with checks. The bill appears to be a good proposal for the retailers; a nightmare for dent has been selected to attend the Presiden- checks. Another banker suggested that the problem with bad checks lies in the training, that insufficient attention is applied to the checking of identification and other steps to help insure the bankers, Ferguson said. Among numerous comments and questions from the Chamber audience was one from a banker who cited the present system of issuing guarantee cards to those who qualify. I think the system is there, he asserted, adding, Were telling you (retailers) about cautious to be against tial Classroom for Young Americans Washington, Rebecca checks.
