Like his more famous contemporary, Frederic Remington, Farney was fascinated by the people and places of the Far West and found in them a Farney presents themes and moods in his paintings which have becomecentral to al was perhaps the truest image of the West's< diverse temper Farney created most of his works after he met with the actual tribes or visited the sites in the Dakotas, Montana. New Mexico and Arizona NEW YORK (NEA) — off Broadway, a dizzy Shaw comedy, “Misalli- ance,” has been playing to packed houses for several weeks. Why Shaw? Apparently, both performers and audiences alike are thirsting to see strong womancharacters on the stage. The problem is that nobody seems to be writing them. It wasjust a matter of time before producers worked their wayback to Shaw, whose women were seldom shrinking violets. In fact, both “Candida” (1894) and “Misalliance” (1909) focus on headstrong prefeminists who are caught upin the yoke of Victorian morality and are trying to decide whether to shrugit the heck off or not. There's a big difference between these two Shaw revivals, though. “Misalliance,” the more modestly mounted of the AUTUMN SHOE SALE!: the rest later in his studio The BYU-owned drawing relates directly to a small oil sketch of the sity of Texas at Aus samesubject in the Univer lection. as well as to Farney’s only known pastel, ‘The Challenge.” in which the Indian and hor: in the same pose but with a raised rifle replacing the peace sign The drawing’s size may not beits only unusual feature. “A gallery dealer in Arizona who was questioned on the piece raised the question of the Indian possibly being Geronimo. a personal friend of Farney,” REG. 17.99 TO 21.99 12. 98 said Hilligass REG. 22.99 22.99 TO. 25.99 14.98 An inscription at the bottomof the drawing indicates it was a gift to a Sophie Gisbert, a friend of Farney who directed a prominent riding REG. 26.99 & MORE 16.98 academy in Cincinnati. Actress Joanne Woodward hasjust returned to the Broadway stage — after a 17-year absence — to star in a much-ptblicized revival of Shaw's “Candida.” Meanwhile, QUALICRAFT" SHOE STORES sketching his work on small boards and finishing pair, is a chipper, enter- taining theatrical evening. ‘“Cendida,” directed by Tony Awardwinning playwright Michael Cristofer (“The Shadow Box”), is a total disaster. This theater-inthe-round productionis so inept, so poorly acted, so boring, that it takes a superhuman effort not to bolt for the exit at the first intermission. “Candida” is a play about two men wholove and need the same magnetic woman. One of them is her husband, Rev. James Morell (Ron Parady), a famed socialist parson, the other is Eugene Marchbanks(Tait Ruppert), a_ sensitive, clingy young poet. Candida (Miss Woodward), Must choose between them. We don't care who she picks or why. How can we care when wecan't fathom half the dialogue — Cristofer has dispensed with the English accents and timing, thus leaving much of the intent and humor behind on the printed page.
