Marion Dunn, spor: editer BYU Basketball Squad to Mix It Up at Bingham Youare anold-timerif you can remember when college basketball was a no-contact sport. The college game is much more physical now in all aspects and seemsto rely less and less each year onfinesse. Offensively most people seem to be obsessed with the idea of taking the ball inside and sticking it down someone's throat. Much is madeofthe fact that field goal percentagehasincreased remarkably in college ball, Not too many years agoit has a rarityfor a college team to shoot 50 percent from thefield Nowit seemsasif half the teams in the country are shooting in that area. And the reasonis they are taking the ball to the boards and goingfor the high percentage shot That means contact and the play under the boerds has become brutal. It requires a special kind of courage to stick your nose into the area close to the basket. As a result basketball is now a violent sport. Hey, man, those big guysbattling on the boardsin basketball are taking as much contactas football linemenin the trenches and they do it without the benefit of all that padding For that reason I have a special admiration for the big guys in today’s college basketball. Their gameis physical all tis ng to cut him downtosize The action under the boardsis going to be furious andit should be something to see Well, this Saturday night BYU'sbasketball team will give fans a preview of that coming event. Arnold will take his team to Bingham High School, at 2160 W. 104000 S,, South Jordan, just a hop, skip and jump on the other sideof the Point- of - The - Mountain for an intrasquad game, the only one scheduled thisfall the way. BYU's basketball team has been in practice only a short while but the Cougars have been going after each other and coach Frank Arnold's injury list compares favorably with that of the BYU football team The Cougars open the college basketball season in a nationally televised battle with the team they closed out the 1981 season against Virginia The game will be played in Springfield, Massachusetts, Saturday Nov. 21 with the starting time set for 11 a.m. MST. It is the annual Tip-Off Classic in connection with the Basketball Hall of Fame and the Peachbasket Festival The gameshould be a brutal affair inside with 7-4 Ralph Sampson leading Virginia and BYU's big frontline of 6-10 Fred Roberis, 6-11 Greg Kite,6-8 Steve Trumbo and 6-8 Gary Furniss | youn FRED ROBERTS YOUNG GARY FURNISS The gamewill start at 7 p.m Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for students. All proceeds go to the Bingham High Athletic Department. Roberts is a graduate of Bingham High and will lead the Cougarsin that intrasquad battle on his old playing floor. But just becauseit is an intrasquad game, doesn't mean there won't be plentyof violence inside. Arnold will shift some of his players from squad to squad and along the way Roberts, Kite, Trumbo and Furniss will find themselves going at each other. ‘That should be worthtriple the price of admission. Talking to the Provo Kiwanis Club members recently, Roberts talked about his experience playing international ball. He said his BYU teammates — Kite, Trumbo and Furniss — wereat least as good as any of the big men he had played against or with. I think that one of the mostinteresting battles will take place with Roberts going against Furniss. I don’t know what their mothers fed them when they werelittle but whatever it was madethem absolutelyfearless, They love taking the battle to the boards. They stick their headsinto the mostviolent action on the floor, They ask no quarter and I have never seen them give quarter. Well, Saturday night they'll mix it up at Bingham High. If you can hardly wait for that Nov. 21 meeting with Virginia, that intrasquad game should help make the time pass more quickly. Andit's for a good cause You can't ask fer more than that |
