Show wember5, 1981 Alistair Cooke: Modest Man With Masterpiece By DAVID HANDLER NEW YORK (NEA) — Even though Alistair Cooke has been living here for more civilized coffee tables everywhere in the coming weeks Here is a chance for fans to relive their than 40 years he remains our image of the favorite, model English gentleman — witty, civilized impeccably tailored Off-camera, his appearance and manner do nothingto belie that image. He is decked out in a dapper green tweed suit with pocket hankie and suspenders. His white hair is perfectly combed. He lights his cigarette with both grace and precision. At age 72 Alistair Cooke is, and always will be, a Cambridge man As any fan of the PBSseries, ‘‘Masterpiece Theatre’ knows, Cocke has been that show's host and tour guide throughoutits 10-year run — offering breezyprofiles, essays and history lessons. He describeshis function as that of a headwaiter. He indicates what the menu has to offer but imposes no personal judgment about the competenceof the chef. Cooke has assembled those introductory remarks, revised them a bit and put them between hard covers. ‘A Decade of Masterpiece Theatre Masterpieces,” his lavishlyillustrated volume, is sure to be found on ALISTAIR COOKE from “I, Claudius" to “Upstairs Downstairs." Hereis also a chance for Cooke to, in his own way, comment on the com petency of the chef. His personal favorite’ I'd say ‘Upstairs, Downstairs,’ he replies It wasa brilliant thing. It had great insight Britain. particularly its BBC. has been the backboneof ‘Masterpiece Theatre” through the years. That is changing. Fewer BBC at Birmingham or the Old Vic. Series are being produced now and, come 1983, PBS will lose its BBC rights t Masterpiece Theatre.’ I never forget that dandruffy professor who is only on screen for 10 minutes. Cooke also says American television won't commit large sumsto a series of limited appeal. “You must say from the start that this program is going to haveat besta large small audience, and accept that. You mustalso pick your manto doit and notinterfere with him.” Heis skeptical. He speaks from personalexperience. Before there was “Masterpiece Theatre,” there was “Omnibus,"’ which he hosted from 1952 to 1959. TVhistorians consider it the finest cultural program in commercial network history His intimate approachis helped immensely by his uncanny memory. He can totally memorize a ‘‘Masterpiece Theatre’ intro in 10 minutes. “Simply a mental exercise." he says. “And that way I never have to use a teleprompter. With the teleprompter you don’t look the audiencein er.”the eye — you look over their right should: (NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISEASSN.) The impact is already being felt i productions are slated for this season's Masterpiece Theatre’ lineup In retrospect, says Cooke, “We were lucky and was immensely entertaining at the same to be able to mine the BBC drama depart- tuume mentin its heyday. This enabled us to tap an enormousrange of talent. People constantly Ironically, the book arrives just as Masterpiece Theatre’ is airingits veryfirst non-British production: “A Town Like Alice,” the fine six-part adaptation of Nevil Shute’s novel that was produced by Australia's boomingfilm andtelevision community. Cooke is delighted with the series have asked me through the years why we must import the shows, why American televi- sion can't produce them. “The main reason is that here we don't have the inventory of hundreds and hundreds of actors and actresses with repertorytr2in- and with the progress the Australians are making. Cooke credits the surge to the fact that talented Australians are staying home now ‘Before,’ he explains, “if they had talent they automatically migrated to London They're not doing that anymore. The Australian government took a terrific interest in the arts with massive subsidies.” ing that England has. Here wetendto create a performer out of the girl next door. She does one play on Broadway, gets noticed and is immediately shipped out to Hollywood, where she remains the girl next door for the rest of her career. “In England, versatility is innate in the training and system.
