(UPI) — Threetime killer Joseph Bowen, ringleader of the five-day hostage siege at Graterford State Prison, admits he is no ‘‘angel’’ but says he hadto try to escape because prison was ‘‘just like South Africa."” “This is a white man's place,’’ the 35year-old black convict told Chuck Stone the Philadelphia Daily News editor who helped negotiate Monday night’s surrender of Bowenand six other inmates. Stonesaid he wasfrightened at times by Bowen — whois serving twolife sentences for slaying one policeman and two prison officials — but added that he believed the convict ‘‘had a sense of humanity’’ and felt dehumanized and embittered by prisonlife “T'm trying to get out of this place,’ Bowen told the black journalist as they negotiated to end the hostage drama that began at Graterford State Prison last Wednesday when the convicts were discovered trying to escape over the prison wall. Thwarted, they fled to the kitchen. “T know I'm not an angel,”’ Bowen told Stone. ‘We reached the point where if we didn’t makea break, we'd just go off. They don’t realize we’re humans. These crackers don't know how to deal with black folks... It’s just like South Africa in here.” Stone said Bowen and the other captors often said during negotiations that they wanted to be treated with dignity. “He (Bowen) referred to somethings he felt he was dehumanized by,” Stone said For example. Bowen told Stone that a guard cursed at him for doing prison job he had been ordered to perform. “It has a dying mentality ... This is a mentalinstitution,” the convict told the journalist. As a teenager in Philadelphia, Bowen was arrested for various minor crimes, butin his 20s, he was convicted of burglary and assault. In 1970, after only three days on parole, he shot to death a Phladelphia patrolman as the officer approached a car he believed to be stolen. Bowentoldpolice he shottheofficer because he didn’t want to go back to jail. He was sent to Holmesburg Prison in Philadelphia, where he committed what officials still recall as probably his most brutal, cold-blooded act.
