SALT LAKE CITY (UPI) — Four incumbent Salt Lake City Council members ran for reelection Tuesday and all won easily City clerks said turnout was light for the municipal election, with only about 20 percentof the registered voters turning out to cast ballots in the four districts featuring elections. One candidate, Edward Parker, ran unopposed in District 7 But in District 1, Ronald Whitehead easily defeated jorie Baker, taking 62 percent of the vole. In Ogden’s at-large City Council race, incumbent Rosanne Peery King won re-election and Clifford Goff edged out Robert Boer for the second at-large seat. The two were elected from a groupof four. King got about 32.4 percent of the vote, followed by Goff who had 27 percent. DeBoer trailed with 26.4 percent. In Council Ward 1, David Haun took a 109-vote victory over Robert Foxley. The Council Ward 2 race went to incumbent Dorman Baird who got 56 percentof the vote. Council Ward 3 incumbent Robert Higginson defeated Dennis Rusch. Higginson got 67 percentof the vote. In Council Ward 4 incumbent Robert Madsen swamped challenger Carl Hancock, getting about 82 percent of the vote. Challenger Elected in Sandy SANDY,Utah (UPI) — Incum- bent Sandy Mayor Paul Thompson failed in his bid for reelection Tuesday,losing to challenger Larry Smith by more than a thousand votes. Smithfot 58.6 percent of the ote, while Thompson had 41.4 percent. Thompsonattributed his defeat to ‘‘reaction against incumbents.'’ He said Sandy citizens blamed him for problems the city has experienced with growth. In theracefor the at-large seat on the Sandy City Council, John Winder defeated Martha Gorton. Ralph Tolman defeated James Mecham for the District 1 council seat and Steve Newton won the District 3 seat over Mike Just. Seven new members were elected to the Alta Recreation District Board. They were Ronda R. Callister, Mike Shea, Steve Newton, Dick Bradford, Terry M. Hansen, Bryant F. Anderson and Mike Eisenberg Logan Write-In Victorious LOGAN,Utah (UPI) — Write in candidate Newel Daines won the Logan mayoral race Tuesday, defeating primary election winners Desmond Anderson and Claude Burtenshaw. Daines, who characterizes himself as a conservative Republican, said he decided to run the write-in campaign because two Democrats won the primaryelection in October. Daines got 46 percent of the vote, while Anderson got 34 percent and Burtenshaw had 20 per- cent. Burtenshaw has served six years on the Logan Municipal Council. In the Logan Municipal Council race, incumbent Ann Skanchy, chairman of the group, took 39 percentof the vote. Formerstate legislator Norm Wahlstrom won the second seat with 24.3 percent of the vote. Finishing third and fourth in the council election were Linda Wagner, with 24 percent, and Far] Miller with 13 percent. Maloney Wins in West Valley WEST VALLinY CITY, Utah (UPI) — Gerald Maloney, claimed Mayor Henry Price's write-in campaign helped split the vote, as he won Tuesday's election to chief executive of West Valley City with only 43 percent of the total ballots. Maloney edged City Commissioner Jerry Wagstaff by about 6 percent of the vote, while Price finished a distant third. Maloney received 3,913 votes to 3,329 for Wagstaff and 1,941 for Price. WestValley votersalso elected six members to a new city council, replacing the commission form of government. Maloney will have the seventh seat on the council. The at-large councilmen will be Brent Anderson and Larry Bunkall, while Mike Embley was elected from District One, Jay Jackson from District 2, Quetin Winder from District 3, and Claude Jones from District 4. Levitt Re-Elected Alta Mayor ALTA, Utah (UPI) — Mayor Bill Levitt easily won re-election to a fourth term as chief executive of the state’s oldest ski resort community, outpolling John D. Cahill by a more than 2-1 margin Tuesday. Levitt, who is chairmanof the Salt Lake County Council of Mayorsand is the ownerof the Alta Lodge, had 111 votes to 51 for Cahill Voters also elected lodge owner Al Kapp and Alta Ski patrol head Doug Christenson to the city council. City employee Carl Sheppard wasthird in the race’ for the two council seats P.C.
