But Gary Totland is all Utah. And right now Gary Totland is all Utah Jazz. As the new marketing director for the pro basketball team, he’s the man burdened with selling the second worst team in the NBA last season to the people (fans who will make or breakthe franchise Thursday night Utah hosts the Golden State Warriorsin the Salt Palace (7:30 p.m.) and will be trying to get above the 500 mark aftersplitting its first two games since the regular season opened last week. In the last home game,Totland introduced a new ‘Jazz Song’’ at halftime produced by Mike McClean, a Utahn and sung-in-part by Provoan Liz Boyack. Totland is a pro. He'd need to be. Marketing the Jazz won't be easy to a sometimes apathetic but sold-on-college-basketball public nestled against the protective Wasatch Front. Totland’s job is to extract fans from cracks and crevices and put them in Salt Palace seats. And selling a team with a seven-year record of 215-362 for .372 percent in the win column maybe as easy as selling tickets to driver training films. Totland is used to worthwhile but uphill causes. He cameto the Jazz this year after a 1l-year stint as executive director of the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Utah. He was instrumental in bringing about Camp Kostopolus, local person like Totland. “We the only outdoor made a mistake. We came and didn't bring in local people. We recreation facility in Utah designed specifically for disabled and handicapped came in with strangers and overlooked the people here in Talk to Totland about promotions, and his positive-minded Utah Laydensaid Totlandis ideal for brain sends out ideas through his mouth so quick you'd think the marketing job with the Jazz somebodyturned up the speed on Gary is experienced, has a tape recorder. A forme™ district all-America baseball player for Utah's Utes in college, he is currently a top-notched tennis player visibility with the local people, “He's the kind of guythat likes guy with a great sense of to get up in the morning,” says Jazz general manager Frank Layden. “‘It's those business people that get up in the morning early that make it. He's one of those kind.”’ Totland hasbig plans. Someof those may include Utah Valley high schools and could even mean double-headers with local high schools in the Salt Palace. He plans on staging a Utah Jazz dancegroup with eight attractive gis, who will really dance at jome games. “They won't be cheerleaders and it isn’t a drill team," Totiand explains. Totland will put Jazz team members in the communitytalking to school and church groups: They'll participate in the Special Olympics. He wants every child and teenager to wear Jazz Tshirts and hats. Totland wants the Utah Jazz to become a household word. “We wantto the fans to leave the gameand take a part of the Jazz with them. The Jazz should be Utah's team. It should be a part of their daily lives. The Jazz and is a hard manto turn down. said Layden “He's a no nonsense person He's agressive but relaxed and a humor.” Layden, not too unlike his Promotions man, is optimistic about the Jazz this season. He sees a winner here in Utah this year “The Jazz is better,’ Layden explains. “We're stronger and quicker and bigger. What we lack is the experience, butit should be possible to make the playoffs and perhapsfinish second to the top in our division. We have the talent. “Thisis the first timeI've ever mentioned that we were competitive for ourdivision playoffs, but I really feel that way this year.”’ So Layden has his promotions manandhis promotions man has his job to do. But the success of the Jazz comes in terms of the gate and gates don’t becomesellout situations unless there's a winner. Totland is a winner. And, then comes Thursday, and the invitation to Golden Stateto play. GARY TOTLAND gamesshould bea kindoffraternity for the fans, a real social event “Ultimately we want to take advantage of this state's enthusiasm for basketball. And winning games is important. A winning team will bring in the fans. But we need to develop a winning program off and on the court. The Dodgers and Lakers have donethis so well, We should do it well,” explains Totland. “People need to know the attributes and personalities of the Utah players.”” Layden says if he had to doit over again, when the Jazz came , to Utah, he would have hired a Pimm Schedules Night With Utes SALT LAKE CITY (UPI) — University of Utah basketball coach Jerry Pimmwill give Ute fans a look athis 1981-82. basketball squad Nov. 9, in annual Night With the Runnin’ Utes. The NCAA CommitteeonInfractions ruled Miami’s football program had committed 66 infractions of recruiting regulations in a five-year period between 1976 and 1980. In addition to probation, the NCAA banned the Hurricanes from appearing in any post-season game this year and reduced the number of players the school will be allowed to sign to football scholarships next year from 30 to LIFESAVER RADIAL ALL SEASON "44 Brccetuan a Lifesaver" Radial All Season Stee P155/60813 Size Plus $1.51 BET.
