Show Evert To Begin No. 1 Bid LANDOVER, Md (UPI) — If Chris Evert Lioydis to regain her No. 1 ranking in the world of women's tennis, she could not pick a better time to start her drive than next Wednesday night fe $250,000 women's championship opens Wednesday at Capital Centre and, though topseeded, Evert is hardly more than a slight favorite against a powerpacked field. Evert’s first-round opponent, Dianne Fromholtz, handled herin the opener of last year's tournament before Evert came back to win the tournament for the second straight year. “I'm not the No. 1 player now, and I Shouldn't be because I haven't played that well,” admitted Evert, who married British tennis player John Lioyd last “Even if I win this week,I shouldn't be considered the No.1 player. That comesfrom winning all year. I was finalist at Wimbledon and in the U.S. Open last year, but just being a finalist doesn’t make a No. 1 player. You have to win those tournaments, and a lot of others.”” Play begins Wednesday afternoon with fourthseeded Evonne Goolagong Cawley meeting Regina Marsikova and second-seeded Martina Navratilova going against Kerry Reid. After Evert meets Fromholtz Wednesday night, third-seeded Tracy Austin takes on Wendy Turnbull. On Thursday and Friday, the first two players to win two matches move into Saturday night’s semifinals. The first two players to lose two matches are eliminated with the four players Posting 1-1 records after two rounds playing Friday for the two remaining semifinal spots. The tournament takes Sundayoff, not wishing to vie with the televised pro football playoffs for paying customers, before Monday night’s championship match worth $75,000 to the winner. In doubles, Navratilova and Billie Jean King meet Ilana Kloss and Betty Ann Stuart Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday, Evert and Rosie Casals meet, Turnbull and Betty Stove with the winners meeting Friday night for the right to divide the $30,000 first-place check. Austin, 16, is becoming a younger version of Evert. Austin downed Evertin the finalsof last year’s U.S. Open and also in the semifinals of the Italian Open and the Grand Prix in Stuttgart. Navratilova handled Evert in the Wimbledon championship and again in the Thunderbirds Classic in Phoenix. Allofthis led to Evert’s skid out of the No. 1 ranking. “For different reasons Martina and Tracy give meproblems,” admitted Evert, ‘‘Martina's lefthanded play is a different look. She's strong, aggrennive and capableof itting a winner on every shot. “Tracy reminds me of myself when I was her age. She has a tremendous amount of determination, especially epalntt the other top Aika anh Utah—P; FRI. 10 A.M.-9 SAT. 10 A.M.-6 P.M.
