But while the rumors about the drivers’ annual gameof musicalchairs now have been sorted out considerable mystery remains about the cars they will drive. The magic word for 1980 seemsto be “turbo,"" but which of the teamswill follow the lead of Renault and switch from 3-liter engines to the turbocharged 1‘ liter models will probably not be seen clearly until the spring or even summerraces Within the sport there is a growing rift between the pro- and anti-turbo teams. While Renault. Ferrari and Alfa Romeo are in favor of turbo development, some of the smaller teams without the resources of those large auto manufacturers to develop and test the turbo concept fear Formula 1 may become uncompetitive without new rules. The most definite new turbo plans belong to Alfa Romeo. TheItalia factory is increasing its Formula 1 commitmentto three cars next season and planning a V-8 turbo engine. “The turbo engine seems to be the wayto go,” says Alfa manager Carlo hiti. There have also been strong indications that Ferrari is experimenting with a V-6 turbo engine and even rumors that the Japanese Honda team might return to Formula 1 with a turbobased machine. Ferrari and Renault are the teams which have retained their drivers for the new season. South Africa's Jody Scheckter will be trying to become the first driver in 20 years to win back-toback World Championships but once again he may find his Ferrari team- mate, Gilles Villeneuve of Canada. the man preventing him emulating Jack Brabham’s 1959-1960 feat.
