They are frankly threatened by the upwardly mobile career women who surround them They feel valueless when the last child leaves the nest Small wonder. It’s tough for the woman at home to accompanyher husband to anykind of social gathering and to hear women in business or professional women, howeverjunior, vying with each other for domination of the conversation Then when the conversation reaches that dreaded turning point, and the polite question comes, ‘And what do you do?” the woman-at- home often issues a one-worder: ‘‘Nothing.”” There is an embarrassed silencein every script atthis point. The woman-at-homehes answered a simple question with the statement, “I’m worth an absolute zero.”’ The best treatment for this malady — which is the unjust denigration of the womanat home — is best administred by the wife herself to herself, with a little help from her husband. The first thing a woman should do is give herself a thorough analysis of her own selfesteen. She should ask herself some tough aues- tions her husband. “And why is he such a g om: By LETITIA (TISH) BALDRIGE A lot of mail crosses my desk from women who do not work. who feel unhappy in the new musician? Because I've been taking good care “When my husband comes homeatnight from being around stimulating people, including womenexecutives, how stimulating doeshefind me?” If a woman concludes she is without any value, she should conscientiously set about to prove how wrongsheis. Firstof all, she has great value — to her family. And since the family is the foundation of our society, it’s an important value. Sheis raising or has raised our future leaders. She has nurtured them, and taught them how to fly on strong wings — into the future. She is the team companion of her husband — whetherheis a farmeror an artist, a fireman or a teacher,a lawyeror anathletic coach,a truck driver or the president of an insurance company. A man, for example, shouid look at the real value of his wife's contribution to community affairs. The great majority of volunteersin this country is female — and mostly women at home. Someof these womendealwith large budgets for the institutions on whose boaids theysit. Manyof them are supervisory managers, deal- ing with large numberso* personnel. Others are responsible for raising the funds — without which those non-profitinstitutions would cease to exist. “What do I really think of myself?” “Am useful in today’s society?” “Do I have any role to play at all? Springville A husband should understand and respect his wife’s volunteer activites, whether it's baking pies for the schoolfair or asking the head of a large corporation for a major donation to the localhospital.
