Monson Dr. Monson, the former assistant academic vice president for learning resources at BYU, was also a president and co-founderof Tronac. Tronac has been donatinga piece of equipment to the institute in Dr. Monson’s memory each year since 1976. William W. Bullock, president of Tronac, said the company, which builds calorimeters and water baths used for researchin universitites and institutes all over the world, works closely with the Thermochemical Institute on many projects. He said BYU was instrumental in helping produce the prototype of the calorimeter donated to the institute this year. Dr. Delbert Eatough, director of BYU's Thermochemical Institute, said the new instrument is already scheduled for use in some important projects. “This is the most sensitive calorimeter in the world today,” he said. “‘It will be an extremely useful tool in the study of anylowrate heat processes.” The type of calorimeter given to BYUhas alreadyreceived wide accep- tance by several battery companies. Becauseofits sensitivity it is able to measure the rate of heat loss in batteries, enabling the manufacturers to determine battery life and to screen defective batteries. The calorimeteralso helpsscientists to better understand internal battery reactions. The prototype instrument was built to evaluate the use of this kind of an instrument to monitor heat production in pacemakerbatteries. “It has become the standard of quality control in the battery industry,"’ Eatough said. But the calorimeter has much wider uses. Studies planned at the ThermochemicalInstitute that will use the new equipment include a project to measure the decomposition rates of different papers — a subject of extreme interest to those concerned with the rapid deterioration of books and papers now being produced. The new calorimeteris actually sensitive enough to measure the tiny amountsof heat released by paperasit decomposes, a process that normally takes at least 50 years. The calorimeterwill also be used to develop a new calorimeter to measure nitric acid in the environment, an instrument that will help scientists understand air pollution and aid in finding better ways to controlit. BYU's Thermochemical Institute was established in 1969 to develop a strong interdisciplinary research program covering a wide rangeof interests. The improved calorimetric equipmentwill help theinstitute to upgrade current research methods. .
