PROPAGANDA FROM UTAH TAXPAYERS ASSN. i FACT This is totally fake. The United Slates Supreme Court ha ptiifn.iiU ruled that it does not have this power ou r Mates tlhdrigui. HCri In t i. less than TOT of the school dollars in Utah are distributed on tin lui d equal dollars per student." Mr. Okon has since admitted that he nun hm e been confused with the California Supreme Court dcridon tSerraiio i.n-- i Mr. OLon has stated he will check' and may retract his bateau nt time before the election. Director of the Utah Taxpayers Assn., has stated that the United States Supreme Court requires the State of Utah to provide all Davis district students the same number of dollars per student as any other school district. (This is his prime reason why Davis students don't need voted leeway dollars.) L Jack Olson, Executive 1. t 2. Mr. Olson has stated that the total 18 million dollars or 25 this year. a Mr. Olson has stated that school officials have not made cuts in the budget This b a drastic miscalculation. The total of all Davis DUtriit budgets increased &8 (from $82,3(8,600 to $87,003,600), ac cording to the adopu-budget and official reports to the Utah State School office. Mr. OKnn h.i not commented on this gross error. 2. of all Davis District budgets grew by . r ' t ' d i i s a 1.6 million dollars were cut including the elimination of .33 teaching positions - with accompanying larger classes, 1 assistant superintendent. 2 i 4 I district supervisors, and several other support staff jobs. Programs which have been reduced include athletics, elementary libraries, school nurse and counseling services. 4 Mr. Olson has implied that Davis Districts salary increases were larger than those in other school districts. In fact, Davb salary increases were slightly below the average of other school districts in the state, and employees also suffered several reductions in exbting fringe benefits. has in past statements, claimed that teachers salaries are going up faster than private sector salaries in the state of Utah. to statistics provided by the Director of Research of Utah Job Service, salary increases for school employees have been lower than those for private sector employees for each of the past three years; and the in- crease gained this year appears to be slightly less than that gained by. private employees during the first part of 1980. Mr. Olson has been challeng- ed in this point and has not made the accusation recently. 5. Mr. Olson 4. 5. According j j j : ) i 6. Mr. Olson has stated outright that this tax will be permanent. THE LEEWAY ELECTION IS NECESSARY TO REPLACE REDUCED FEDERAL IMPACT FUNDS. THIS LOSS OF FUNDING MADE IT NECESSARY TO CUT SCHOOL PROGRAMS BY $1.6 MILLION THIS YEAR. WE HAVE 35 FEWER TEACHERS AND OVER 1,400 MORE NEW STUDENTS. THE INEVITABLE RESULT OF REDUCED FUNDING AND INCREASED ENROLLMENTS IS LARGER CLASSES AND LESS INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION. IF THE VOTED LEEWAY DOES NOT PASS, BE CUTS WILL PROGRAM GREATER NECESSARY NEXT YEAR. The school board will likely vary the level of this tax (up to 3 mills) arc- ording to needs, the same as other school boards, city councils and county commissions presently do. This local tax, like all others, can be altered or abolbhed by action of the State Legislature. 6. WE BELIEVE ITS TIME FOR THE TAXPAYERS ASSN. BOARD TO BE ACCOUNTABLE TO THE PUBLIC-- AS WE ARE AND REPUDIATE THE RECKLESS DISREGARD FOR TRUTH SHOWN BY THE UTA STAFF. : i D 4? 1 j : This ad paid for by the Davis County PTA, DEA and Leeway for Learning Alliance ra t i THE DEMOCRATIC PROCESS DEPENDS UPON A PUBLIC WELL-INFORME- j ; |
