DIKING THE Meek when yotj're driving around town and you notice these g ijt and g ilt running throughout the street they aren't just your average jogger doing a light workout. They probably run on the average of six to ten rrulet a day. The course itself varies at each school but in any event the distance it about two and a half miles. These people do it for the lose of running. There couldnt be any other reason. They certainly dont do it for the glory and the cheers of the crowds because there arent any. WITH THE exception of opposing coaches and runners very few know who the top runners at each school are. Believe me the competition is fierce and these athletes have pride. Cross country is both an individual event and a team event. The top five runners from each school records their finish to determine the outcome of the team standings. So if your runners finish in the top five then the team total would be 15 points. That puts the opponents at numbers six through ten for a total of 40 points. The low score wins the meet. AN INDIVIDUAL can win a meet, region and state but it takes the combined efforts of five runners to pull off the team win. These athletes are a different breed. They dont the get the pep rallies for them, they dont get crowds. But they certainly do get the self pride and satisfaction of a job well done.
