A.svlrr Dont Allow ' te For Two Ite By DAVE WIGHAM Editors Note: This is part two of a five part series on the NBA. Today we deal with contracts: As far as the National Basketball Association is con- cerned there are only two things that you can not have in your contract. Number one, anything about not being able to be traded. A player can, and will, be traded when and to where the club says. Years ago they could have a contract that enabled them to veto a trade, much like the baseball contracts. clause in all their players contracts that they receive more money for every win past 35 on the year. According to some sources this is being outlawed in the league, simply because many feel they are already getting paid handsomely to win. Dave Freedman of the Jazz sees both sides, we dont put scoring as an incentive simply because the guy might not care about the wins as long as he was getting his points. Anything that can help the team we like to put in. Like rebounds, assists and steals. SO HERE comes a rookie in THE ONLY other NBA contracts is that no more than 30 percent of the money can be deferred, which means exactly what it states. If, say, a player signs for five years for 300 million dollars then only 90 million dollars of that amount can be paid after the five years. Sounds like big bucks but down the road with the way salaries are going who knows? Two types of contracts in the league are what are known noand as "guaranteed cut. The guaranteed contract simply means that once the player signs with a team for two years at a certain amount of money then that club has to pay that money no matter what happens. If the player is dropped from the team that team still has to pay him the money. In this case it must be clearly written in the contract that the money is guaranteed. no-n- o AN EXAMPLE of this is that just drafted and hes trying to decide what type of contract to If he signs a five year sign. contract the security is there somew hat, but what if he turns out to be a great player and hes still locked into the amount of money he signed for as a rookie. noted Ben The name of the game in this league is the money. Sign a short term contract, build up your reputation and then for more money when hes an established player. HAVE YOU ever wondered what the five and six year players in the league are thinking when these rookies sign for twice the money they get. "Some of the veterans it bothers and others it doesnt. You have to think that they ha- vent proven themselves in the league but then its obvious j.V& ft 1 A ROOKIE can report to rookie camp without a contract, all they have to sign is a medical release form. But any that are invited back to veterans camp need the contract. Some teams might take into consideration a contract if a player change is needed. The Jazz aren't in that boat though. We dont consider that We added Dave Freedman, had John Ginelle and Pete Maravich on guarantee contracts and cut them and had to pay up. Same with Ron Boone and Brett Vroman last year. We figure the team that starts worrying about that will keep themselves in trouble." A BIG part of the contract now has become the incentives. Giving more money for reaching goals. Things like number of rebounds in the year, minutes played, blocked shots, making an team, being named rookie of the year just about anything that a all-st- player or management can agree on. Last year Darrell Griffith received $25,000 in incentive money for being named rookie of the year by the league. SO THERE you are. Anything, with the exception of trades and deferred payments, can be written in the contract. Make sure that everything is down in black and white because that is a legal binding document. Bonuses must also be written in, if a player scores 100 points in a game the team cant just give him a big bonus unless its in his contract. Incentives are good if pointed toward a team effort, put them down. The no-ccontract simply means that the club cannot cut the player, he has made the team the second he signs the contract. This type of contract is rare in the NBA and the fact is that no member of the Jazz has such a contract.
