Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, 1981 NORTH DAVIS LEADER, SEPTEMBER 3, MdDdDdS CffdDSS A new era is beginning at Woods Cross this year. Ever since the school opened its doors the Wildcats hav6 only known one football coach. However, Wally Hawkins has stepped down from that can usually come up with five aggressive players. senior runner who the coaches are counting on for success. Taz has good quickness and is a fine blocker. and Larry position Eldracher has moved in. JEFF BUXTON, ' younger brother of Bruce Buxton COACH HAWKINS- - has moved on to become a vice principal at one of the junior high schools in the district while Coach Eldracher comes in from a successful stint at Highland High. Having coached at Highland the new Wildcat head man had seen his new school play on several occasions. "I always felt they had a great defensive ball team, plus, they were very physical. I dont think that will change this year. AFTER TALKING to the new head coach he conveyed were not the following: looking for a rebuilding season. We want success as soon as possible. I honestly feel we have a fine group of seniors and this club will be as good as those seniors want us to be. Indeed, the Cats do have a lot of seniors on their club, and the fact is, that many of them saw very little action last year. They do have their share of talented people though. Mike Egan and Bruce Bishop drew raves from other coaches in the region as well as from their own. play for the Cats. Although small coach Dave Cullimore of Egan runners and he just might be the best of the bunch. Mike has it all; speed and power, to become one of the top backs in the state. Taz Smith is another fine By DAVE WIGHAM who was the fullback a year ago, is another top back for the Cats. Jeff and Mike were of the elected team so their leadership is also a plus. Junior Doug Sendobry is the biggest back of them all and hell be looking for some playing time. RECEIVERS: Here the Wildcats have a strength with two of their top receiv- . . QUARTERBACKS: Finda replacement for Kevin Nitzel wont be easy. Kevin was the main man for three years at the school and has now taken his act up north to ing USU. Both are fine athletes who can throw the football. Whichever one doesnt start at quarterback will be our starting safety," noted Coach Eldracher. Junior ers from last year returning. Senior Doyle Hauter gives them a great outside threat while Bruce Bishop is as good a tight end as there is in the state this season. Doyle is a coaches delight at wide receiver, he runs excellent routes, has good speed, and will catch anything. Bruce makes a big target and has good hands. (63) Bruce also likes contact and is one of the best blockers on the team. Barton Bishop, no relation, and Dave Mott are both expected to see plenty of time catching footballs. Junior Scott Lonson will back up Bruce at the tight end spot. OFFENSIVE LINE: The cats really don't have a big line but their coaches are im- pressed with their quick- ness. Inexperience isis but word another problem enthusiasm will more than make up for it. The Cats have eight seniors who are fighting for spots on the O line, they are: Dave Italisano (5 10 200 lbs.j is the biggest while Matt Harmer (63 190 lbs.) is the tallest. Todd Dyson is ready in the wings and will be pushing. If he had to choose right now, he stated that Kent had the inside shot at quarterback. RUNNINGBACKS: In senior Mike Egan the Cats have one of the finest running backs in the region. Mike comes from a longline OTHERS INCLUDE Scott Grosenbach (61 190 lbs.); Gene Christiansen (6' 180 lbs.); Richard Millward (5 10 170 lbs.); Craig Jones 5 175 lbs.); Gordon 170 lbs.); Mike Peck (59 1 lbs.); and Brad 190 lbs.). Depth is definitely not a prime problem for them when it comes to linemen. Senior Matt Eden, (whats a Wildcat team without an Eden), is back to hold down one spot at defensive end. Matt is small but quick and loves to hit. Junior Doug Sendobry, who is also slated to play will play on the defensive end spot. Coaches . are also talking high on sophomore Travis MacBeth, who could very well find himself in varsity competition before its all over. LINEBACKERS: With a player of the caliber of Bruce Bishop the Cats have to consider this position as a strong point on defense. Bruce has great range to go along with his size and speed at this spot. A starter from last year he will be the catalyst of the D. Seniors Shaun Lindsey and Craig Jones will be at the other two spots and all they need is some playing time. This" group will only get better with game experience. SECONDARY: As mentioned the so called other quarterback will be in the , secondary which means either Blair Kent or Blake Andersen will go at safety. Miland Kofford is another sure thing in the secondary along with Bart Bishop. Junior Brad Lynn is also being looked at for one spot along with Dave Mott, Taz Smith and Jeff Buxton. COACHES OUTLOOK: Coach Eldracher is part of a movement in this region. He is one of three new head men at the schools along with Viewmont and East. All this gives the new league a mystery look about it. THE NEW Wildcat coach is honest about his appraisal Its veryit of the league. it, strong, no doubt about will be difficult for Woods Cross to win it.
