Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, SEPTEMBER 3, 1981 By DAVE WIGHAM Viewmont High football will have a new look this season. The Vikes have their third head coach in as many years with Mark Pierce moving into their school after a two-yestint as headman at Bear River. Mark has a simple philosophy about this season, Theyll do what it takes to win. ar SURE WERE small and inexperienced but well surprise some people this year. We may start slow but watch out for us at the end. Sounds a little like the act the Vikes pulled off last year when they came out of nowhere to claim second place in the state tournament. Skill people are a big plus for t.ie Vikes this year as most of their top people in those spots will be back. Gone are the likes of Kyle Morrell, Norm Parrish and Brent Daines, but folks like Steve Caputo, Kurt Mathews and Jeff Porter are all back. QUARTERBACKS: Three people will be fighting for the starting berth at this spot. Senior Rodger Davis will battle Doug Lee and Layne Rozema, a couple of juniors, for top billing. All of them are inexperienced with Lee having the only varsity playing time of any of them. Coach Pierce likes the three because as he put it, hey are eager to learn." RUNNING BACKS: With starters Steve Caputo and Troy Larsen who saw a lot of action at fullback, the Vikes have two good runners. Caputo is the speedster of the two and although only a junior he is considered one of the top backs in the area. e Larsen is a runner who enjoys contact. Juniors Rob Moon, Scott Hubbard and Sean Salmon give the Vikes a lot of depth at running backs and all three will be pushing for playing time. These backs, along with their wide receivers, will be the key to the success of the team. bull-typ- RECEIVERS: Viewmont has three burners, two were starters las: year, to go at the wide spots. Senior Jeff Porter is fast and has good hands. Junior Kurt Mathews is probably the best of the group, he has great size and excellent speed. Word is many college people are already looking at him. Junior Doug Scovil is another jet they can put on the outside. Inside at tight end a couple of seniors will battle for playing time. Chuck Whitney and Greg Rasmussen will both see action at this spot, both are good size and can block. Junior Kevin Smith could push these two. OFFENSIVE LINE: This is the big question mark for Viewmont. How will the line play? None of the returning players have experience, although, Craig Roberts did see some limited action. Roberts (6 senior) will 185 anchor the line and he appears the only sure thing right now. Brett Horne (58 185 senior) and Mark Law (63 175 junior) will battle for the center spot. Other players the coaches will be looking at for starting berths will be Gregg Boothe (61 180 senior); Martain Tellaroli (5 10 180 Senior); Jerri Miller ( 5 1 1 170 Senior); Bryan Spencer (5 10 180 Senior). IF THESE seniors dont live up to their billing then there are plenty of juniors itching for a shot on the varsity. George Eames (5 10 175) and Brian Keith (6 175) are a couple the coaches are high on. DEFENSIVE LINE: This group has a little more experience than the offensive group, although small Aaron Buttars (5' 10 165 senior) has been praised by the coaches. He was made for the nose guard sport. Hes extremely quick and loves to hit. Joining him are Roberts and Boothe who both saw action last year, while Spencer had some time playing at Cedar High. These guys are small but extremely quick, and as Coach Pierce noted, If we have to gamble then well do it. With his size and speed junior Curt Mathews is already being looked at by some college people. Curt was a starter as a sophomore last year and gives the Vikes experience at the wide spot. LINEBACKERS: Troy Larsen is back for another season here and although hes the only one with much playing time this spot could be a bright spot for the Vikings. Senior Paul Jensen will start at one spot with four juniors fighting for another. Jarcn Pack has drawn raves from the coaches with his hitting and Mark Law played some last year as a sophomore. Matt McNeil and Kent Wilson are also in the picture for playing time. SECONDARY: Senior Ted Jones is the only starter back but the coaches still look to this position as a strength. Anthony Skcdros is highly touted by the coaches, he did not play football last year after a fine sophomre season. junior Steve Caputo is a returning Matter for Viewmont at the tailback spot. Despite not being as big ns some of the other backs in the area Steve is still considered one of the best around. Although only a Oct. 7 Oct. 15 Oct. 23 Tad Lindsey is back, he saw limited time while Brett Roberts and Chris Randall are also in the coaches plans. COACHES OUTLOOK: Coach Pierce sees the region as one of the toughest in (he state. Theres not an easy game in the bunch. Anyone can win. He was then asked to give the first thing that came to his mind at the mention of the other sides. He indicated the following: Bountiful, the team to beat: Woods Cross. Cin- derella team: Davis, always consistantly tough; High- land, good skill people; East, a lot of speed. WHEN ASKED to predict the region finish. Coach Pierce pointed to Bountiful and Davis as the top two at Olympus tiigland at Viewmont Viewmont at East Viewmont teams followed by Viewmont, Highland, East and Woods Cross. Bountiful and Davis are the top sides with the other four right there together fighting for the third spot for the state berth." he indicated. Coach Pierce has put together a different coaching staff this year. John Edwards is back to handle the quarterbacks and receivers and Randy Johnson is the defensive coordinator. Gil Rodriguez joins the staff and will handle all the line. ON THE sophomore level Norm Miller w ill be aided by Mike Gardner of Centerville. Last, year the sophomore team tied for the region title and things should be in- teresting this year since these sophomores didn't have football in junior high. 3:30 7:30 3:00 |
