Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, SEPTEMBER 3, 1981 ser, and being an himself he knows one when he sees one. Backing him will be junior Eric Johnson who Waite says would probably start at any other school. Hell push Phil all year and well have to find somewhere to play him, noted Waite. er By DAVE WIGHAM Paul Waite usually speaks of his football team in a modest sense so when Jie tells you he has a good team then you better watch out for the Braves. Coach Waite is entering his tenth season as head man of the Braves and he is looking for good things from this group. YOU consider ' thisWHEN senior class was that simply awesome in the sophomore and junior varsity leagues, combined with a junior class that was just as good last year as sophomores, you get an indication of his optimism. Bountiful has a reputation as being a senior oriented team. Most of the players are seniors, with the juniors waiting their turn. In the past only a couple of players returned with experience. This year the Braves have quite a few starters back. It will be tough to replace Alan Meldrum, Rob Allred, Rex Remigi and the other graudated players, but Waite has a lot of talented folks back in the teepee this season. QUARTERBACKS: In its Phillip This senior was a two words Schmutz. starter last year and has already proven hes one of athletes in the best the state this year. Coach Waite calls him a great pas WITH SCHMUTZ at the helm the Braves can afford to put the ball in the air more. No doubt about it. You can print that well throw the football with these quarterbacks. That will open up our great running attack. RUNNINGBACKS: Again a strong point for the Braves. Back are fullbacks Rob Eggett and halfback Todd Smith. Along with Schmutz they have their entire starting backfield back this season. Eggett (5 11, 206 lbs. senior) proved last year to be one of the toughest runners to bring down. Hell run around you, over you and even through you. Smith (511 170 lbs. senior) has good speed which gives Waite the inside-outsid- e threat. Two other seniors will see action according to their coach, they are Mike Gee (5 11 167 lbs. senior) called by his coach the fastest hes ever had, and Steve Hadley (6 192 lbs. senior) called one of the most physical, will play plenty. Then junior Bruce Talbott could be used. Bountiful City Recreation (MfflSte) WiiDn RECEIVERS: Seniors Ronnie Hill, Jay McCaan, Dave Wilson and Steve Hansen are slated for action here. They are versatile, they do a lot of things well. They are also good blockers which means they could move inside for a double tight end alignment. Junior Benson Alder will push these four. At tight end the Braves will have Darrell Welling (6 182 lbs. senior) who is the third Welling to play for Bountiful. Matt Thornley, a big junior, will be the backup. - V-;- ,V . ' 'sv - OFFENSIVE LINE: Todd Petersen (6 186 lbs. senior) anchors.the line at his center spot. Rich Lundquist and Mike Lee with be the backups. At tackle. Coach Waite points to Chris Badger (63 195 lbs. senior) and Scott 190 lbs. Sizemore (5 11 senior) to start with junior Dave Smith (63 230 lbs.) a definite possibility. Bountiful will put some small quick guards on the field which Coach Waite likes. Alan Schwab (5 10 180 lbs. senior) and Craig Holmes (6 180 lbs. senior) are slated as starters with Brad Hansen (5 10 170 lbs.) and Art Miller (5'11 185 lbs.) expected to see action. r - J'w Is ' DEFENSIVE LINE: Senior Phillip Taula (6 200 lbs.) will be the mainstay here with Badger, Smith, Coach Waite calls Rob Eggett the best running back he has coached.
