Lancers Inexperienced LAYTON dont - Youth and inexperience usually mix well in Region One womens vol- leyball circles, not with toughies like Weber, Bonneville and Roy around. BUT THATS all the Layton Lancers have and thats what theyll hope to compete with. According to Carolyn Warren, the Lady Lancers coach, the next few years at Layton will prove to be interesting if the present bunch of girls continues to improve the way they have in recent games. "We won't be winning any titles this year, said Warren. But I couldnt think of a tougher league to help prepare the young girls Ive got for future competition. All weve got is three seniors, four juniors and a bunch of THE THREE seniors include Kathy Annette Adams and Kelly Davis who Warren says are providing all the leadership. Liz Mattis may be the best setter on the team as a junior and also provides valuable team leadership. From there Warren has been starting any combination she could feel comfortable with. At times the Lancers have played as many as four sophomores on the floor. , LOADED DOWN with young players, just like their neighbors in Layton, Margo Jones is still trying to find the right combination that will help Clearfield net one of the four playoff berths. "Theyre so young (just one senior on the SOME OF the others that have seen good amounts of playing time include Kayla Mary Perkins, Darlene Rawls and Kim Anderson. In the winter it will be Brent Checketts that will lead the women in basketball. According to Warren, Layton fans can feel pretty optimistic about basketball since Checketts is returning more experienced players. ." THOSE FEELINGS were enhanced of course after having had numerous chances to be the first team to beat the Bobcats this year. But Sky View prevailed again and with a 0 league mark stands in a very good position of winning the league title. in region play with Falkons fell to loss and as Coach Hancock put it, Weve got to beat both Roy and Layton to go to state, in fact everyone except Sky View has to win their last two games to be really sure of a state 3-- 1- -2 .'.-- berth." JOHN FLINT, one of Hancocks chief tants, made the observation that the Falcons have yet to have one complete good game. "We still havent put it altogether, he said. Flints opinion reflects the truth probably. Mark Wilson has shone brilliantly in some outings but if it wasnt an injury then it was something else that prevented him from having a great game from start to end. The same is true for runningbacks Dean Foulger and Todd Blair and for Wilsons receivers Kent Nye, Scott Tremea and Roger Hill. assis- WEVE HAD good efforts from the upfront people on offense, said Flint, But theyll agree that we havent put one good complete game together. It would be ideal according to Flint if the Falcons could finally put it together in their final two outings. Tom Butler, Clearfields center had a pretty solid game against Sky View. ' The thing that is already old news now is the two big pass plays that beat Clearfield. We had good pressure on Michelson (SVs QB) on the last pass play he beat us on, but he got it away and it beat us, said Flint. The Bobcat touchdown plus the PAT may have dampered Clearfield spirits for awhile but the Falcons came back in the final few minutes of the game and nearly pulled it off. DESPITE THE two big pass plays that did Clearfield in, the Falcons still managed to get five interceptions. Senior J.C. VonCollin had two while juniors Hal Moore had one and Jeff ' HANCOCK WAS quick to say that the Cottonwood game, which took place Wednesday afternoon, would be a key. A win there would give his team a little added confidence going into the final two league games. There are no variables, said Hancock, "Other than the fact we hold our own destiny in our own hands. It doesn't matter what kind of combinations you look at, weve got to win our last two games-.AY La , r ' i i t ' - - i - THE FINAL two contests against Roy and Layton serve as a big treat for the fans since both schools are almost cross-tow- n rivals and fierce rivals for that matter. "You couldnt have it more emotional, said Flint, All three of us are fighting for our lives and that only makes the rivalary that much more heated. I THINK the team that commits the fewest mistakes, will win those games, said Flint. Clearfield will be looking for revenge against Roy who beat the Falcons 20-- 0 last year in their march to the state championship. The Falcons also remember the defeat they received from Layton in the final game of the year which ironically was the Lancers only win of the '81 season. Hypnotist Produces 1 . IS junior Mandy Henneberger, AT 1 another Falcon blocker. Still another junior is captain Corrie Vigil who has been a setter so far. Jones has plans to move her around in the offense in future games to get something stirred up. RAYELYNE HAYES has without any question been playing the best volleyball of anyone on the team, if not the region. She sets, hits and as Jones says, "is always in the right place at the right time. Hayes plays the point guard position for the Clearfield basketball program. THE FALCONS have come close! They nearly beat Bonneville in a couple of very close sets. The Lakers turned around the next week to defeat the defending state champion, Weber Warriors. Jodi Sherod is the teams only senior, the middle blocker and the strongest Clearfield has. Blair ran the ball beautifully," said Hancock about Todd's effort against Sky View. It was Blair who brought the Falcons alive in the third quarter against Sky View when he broke away for several long bursts and finally a 24 yard scamper that resulted in Clearfields only touchdown. COULD A local hypnotist make the difference? Maybe so, according to one of Clearfields senior runners, Darren Lewis. AFTER DOING NO better than 66th in a couple of cross country invitationals, Lewis decided to visit Jane Bergin in Roy who in the past has hypnotized athletes and also specializes in analyzing handwriting. She did just the regular stuff any hypnotist would do, said Lewis, She told me to relax, put me in a trance and later told me that if I needed some extra energy that all I needed to do was to touch my left side. THE NEXT day Lewis ran in the Orem Invitational and as the race was winding to a close, Lewis found himself running nip and tuck with Davis Dale Espinoza. I wanted to pass him so I touched my left side and zip, I was gone. I sped right past him and finished at least 10 runners ahead of him, said Lewis who later said he couldnt believe what happened. Lewis ended up finishing 25th in the Invitational and ranked 1 1th among 4A runners, his best performance of the season. EVERYTIME I need a little extra energy, I just tap my left side, said Lewis. With or without hypnosis the Falcons stand a very good chance of claiming the region title in cross country. Bonneville, for the first time in years, is out of the picture. The best bets are Sky View and Weber who will both give Clearfield a solid run for the gold when the showdown finally gets here.
