THE DARTS of Davis High continued their impressive winning ways last Friday night with a muddy, mucky 26-- 6 victory over previously unbeaten Region Four foe, East. With just three games remaining and two of those three being critical region bouts, more folks than ever are taking a good second and third look at what is making Davis tick. After-al- l, the Darts arc on the verge of successfully defending their Region Four title. With a win over Woods Cross on Oct. 15th they would be assured of at least a tie for the region pot of gold. IN RECENT weeks there has been much mention of the junior class w ho have filled in admirably on the varsity. But the vital link to the success Davis has had so far is the superior leadership of the senior class which altogether has produced a defense that is ever becoming stronger and more difficult to contend with. Brian Bock, who played outstanding against East and Highland and is Davis studentbody president, contributed his feelings, The one thing that has helped this team the most is that the seniors dont hold anything against the juniors. It's just Davis High, not just seniors, or juniors and sophomores. Were working for one cause. BOCK HAS progressively gotten better at the middle linebacker position and helped immensely to anchor a defense that has allowed only 9 points in three region games. In the contests a total of 28 Darts three were allowed. points It just goes to show that were improving with each game, said Bock. pre-seas- KEVIN PITTS, a senior lineman on offense and defense, said quickness and penetration was the key. Coach (Jim) Dickson has had our sights set on penetration all season. We may be small but were quick, said Pitts who at 510 and 185 pounds is the second biggest player on the squad. Ironically many of Dart sophomore players are bigger than varsity kids but size isnt important says Pitts when everything else is working for ya. They are quick," said Dickson, one of Sawleys assistants. They may be as quick off the ball as any group Ive ever worked with, and of course thats the name of the game. of the Darts size, Dickson The biggest guy weve got is 180 reported, pounds but its big hearts that make the differ SPEAKING also Mud-Cake- d - Davis quarterback, Rick Sccrist. still believes that the juniors look to the seniors for leadership, all the seniors, not just those who play. The tournament, which was scheduled to take place last year but was later postponed, got underway this season amidst some pretty cold and rainy weather. whom hes shot a known for several years, says the two classes of players have mixed together better than anyone expected. "nicy will be awesome next year," said Sccrist of the undefeated sophomores and the impressive junior crew this year. SECRIST HAS been content to do just what Ward Sawley maps out and though he isnt getting a chance to throw the ball more he says, "When your winning, why change?" This past summer I spent a lot of time working on my passing and I thought seriously that we would pass more, but it really doesnt matter that much because were listening and doing the things the coaches want and were winning as a result," said Secrist. ot COMMENTING on the work of the offensive and defensive lines, Secrist stated, Like I said at the first of the year, if we were to have a chance at all, it would be because of our determination and hustle. I swear every game that those guys give a 140 percent. Were winning because we compliment each other so well, said Dickson. They dont worry about whose doing what, they just get the job done. WERE JUST a solid blend, said Pitts, The seniors want to do everything they can to make the juniors better, because theyre helping the entire cause achieve its goals. Sawley states that every senior has done two-unde- something to bring about the 1 record. Bock leads the team in tackles with 35, Pitts has been very consistent on the line, Darren Ryujin may be the smallest linebacker in the league but one of the toughest too, Secrist has led the team at QB all year, Clayne White may be the smallest defensive end in the region but again one of the most durable, Kent Lyman has caught two critical passes in each of the past two weeks, Brad King and Brad Nielsen have both become old faithfuls at runningback and defensive 5-- back. THE REMAINING seniors, Sawley claims are the very reason Davis is 0 in league, are Craig Kottrell and Jay Jeppson, Tad Cowley, Danny Wilson, Mike Hayward, Jeff Norton, Corman King, Doug Mayfield, John Sabin, Lance Christensen, David Beck, Chris Stevens, Matt Page, Ben Knowlton, Jaren Page, Matt Page and Shaun Spriggs. 3-- Mike Kettell, Clearfields talented junior golfing ace, took top honors at the recently concluded Davis County High School Golf Championships. ; Region One It was last Saturday mornKAYSVILLE that you could have ing about seven found Ward Sawley soaking mud-cake- d jerseys in the Sam Morgan Fieldhouse. AT EIGHT oclock you could find him filling the washing machines with those same discolored jerseys. About half hour later he was coming back from the local market with 30 pounds of Tide. NOT A FITTING job for a guy who loves tracking down elk on an eligible weekend or playing racquetball with a close friend. But last Saturdays job of separating grime and muck from jerseys was one done with a smile, maybe even a laugh or two. WHY? Because his Darts the night before had buried East 26-- 6 in a muddy, mucky Region Four battle that left Davis with an overall 1 mark and better still a perfect 0 record in region. 5-- 3-- THE VICTORY, coupled with Viewmonts trouncing of Woods Cross, left Davis on the threshold of successfully defending their ReWildgion Four football crown. A win over the assure cats on Oct. 15 in Woods Cross would the Darts of at least a tie for the league title. Sawley, who has played in mud and muck before, thought the poor field conditions would THE BEST thing 1 could do was to keep my hands warm and try to prevent a bogey, said Kettell, The weather wasnt going to allow very many birdies. Kettell hit every green in regulation until No. 14 where he still managed to chip his shot onto the green, hitting the flagpole and saving himself with a par. Prior to that young Mike had managed two two-foputts for birdies and r. stood BUT AS the cold persisted and the rain kept coming, Kettell bogied the final four holes and still went away as the medalist winner for 1982. I kinda knew where I stood before bogeying those holes and I knew if I didn't do anything dumb, that I might win it," he said. The Clearfield junior has been golfing for seven years but it wasn't until this summer that game took a sudden turn for the better. He started the summer by winning $250 in merchandise at a junior tournament at Hill Air Force Dase. The next week he won the El r. Monte Junior title with a LATER IN the summer he spent two weeks at the Arnold Palmer Bay Hill Golf Academy in Florida. Shortly after that he was golfing in the Junior World Tournament in Torrey Pines, California. Id like to be a pro someday, said Mike about the future, If I couldnt do that then I might try being a club professional or working for some golf course. He has a few favorite colleges that he plans to make a decision about attending. He says for sure that hell attend college for four years before taking a crack at the pros. BUT FIRST and foremost on his mind is winning the medalist title in both Region One and state. His biggest challenge appears to come right from his own region where Tim Parson of Sky View has been tough to beat all year. Also tough, has been Jeff Pierce of East High. Brian Bock, Brad Nielsen and Jeff Hammer (twice) were the other culprits who stole East passes Friday night. BECAUSE OF all the cuts and misdirection runs we made, I thought wed have trouble but once the game got going it didnt seem to bother our kids, said Sawley. The Dart defense may have put up their best effort against the run this year according to Sawley. Davis held East to 34 yards held Easts 200 pound fullback in tact. DAVIS HELD Fast to 146 yards total offense I BELIEVE we just had a better week of practice before the East game compared to that of our letdown week against Highland, even despite the weather conditions, said Sawley. In all respects Sawley said the game went pretty well the way he expected, only that he expected the Leopards defense to be a little stiffen OFFENSIVELY the Leqpards havent scored a lot of points this season and theyve been prone to making mistakes on offense but have been lucky in the past few games having recovered back some of their fumbles. But not against Davis. East fumbled three times and lost it every time. On top of that they were intercepted five times including one by Greg McNabb for a touchdown. East hasnt got a high powered offense, so I wasnt really surprised, said Sawley as he reflected back on victory. We did a great job shutting them down, said Sawley. Davis was to prepare for Bonneville on Wednesday. Sawley said his kids were pumped to play the Lakers in remembrance of what Bonneville did to his squad last year. We treated that game just like it was a region game, said Sawley. WILL OVER confidence overtake the Darts? Not according to Sawley it wont. The kids know they didnt get this far by being hot stuff and just showing up. I think theyre smart enough to know what will get them to the state playoffs. As soon as they start thinking theyre d, well have problems, admitted Sawley. THE TRADEMARK of these kids is hard work. I dont think weve ever had a group of kids who have worked harder from summer workouts to week to week practices, than this group. This year the juniors think they can do it again, said Mike Gardner, a faculty member who is helping to organize the event. This is a very fun activity and we hope the community will come out and support us in it. |
