THE CO AL of the Center is to otter assistance to parents in the many facets of child rearing. The Center is located in the Monte Vista Center at 100 South 200 East in f armington. and is open on regular school days from 8;J0 until 4 with an extended check-ou- t lime unit) 7 on Wednesday evenings. T he Center has a w ide variety of hooks, educational toys, and filmstrips chosen to help parents meet the emotional needs of children. Among the materials available arc books dealing with general parenting skills, the social and physical development of children, and family activities. A I MQI E selection of children's literature is also available. These books have been carefully chosen to help children deal with specific areas such as a new baby coming into the family, the death of a loved one. or getting along with family members, etc. Taking part in the San Rafcal. GUIDE DOG GRADUATION LAYTON , - Three blind Utahn recently returned from San Rafael, Calif, with their guide dogs. The three blind youths are Mark Smith. Carmen Bryant and John Keser. They have under gone a thirty-da- y period of intensive training with their guide dogs at the special blind school for this purpose in San Rafael. THE GLIDE dogs which have had eighteen months of training are closely matched with the blind person before the training starts. During the training period, the blind person and the dog are required to cross a six lane freeway strip in San Francisco. The person and companion dog are taken to China town and into a forested area. JOHN KESER of Utah and his dog. Traveler, were chosen as valadictorians at the graduation ceremony which was attended by 300 people. Twenty-tblind people received wo diplomas. Since returning to Utah, the three people have gained a lot more confidence and mobility. They can now go shopping, visiting and working in our sighted society. There is also a large collection of material to help parents of children with specific needs such as learning disabilities, delayed development, neurological impairments, and other handicapping conditions. Information concerning preventive health care and consumerism is also available. THE EDUCATIONAL toys include a wade variety of puzzles, games and developmen tal aids for very young childi en on up through the elementary years. The filmstrips discuss situations which help parents reach very young children as well as (he teenage years. Some are on an adult level and give parents much factual information concerning various aspects of child management. One senes of vpectaJ interest at this lime are Walt Disney filmstrips that leach children about dealing with strangers and offer suggestions to young people for avoiding difficult situations and promote llicir safety. Other filmstrips deal with the maturation process, school and seasonal safety, fun tongs, and are available to parents for use In their homes. THE CENTER it under the direction of a certified social worker who is available for limited counseling concerning parent-chilrelationships. Appointments can be made by calling the tLRC Center. The emphasis is placed on learning experithrough hands-o- n ence. Most coursework is done at the actual job site, as pictured above. Students of the Davis Area Vocational Center learn residential and commercial electrical wiring through an training course. STUDENTS can enroll at anytime. To assure a position in class it is encouraged that you enroll immediately. Day classes are held from 7:45 to 2:25 for a full day program and to 10:40 or 11:30 to 2:25. If you desire a half day either 7:45 program. Evening classes in residential wiring, commercial wiring and motor control will be available in the near future. Mrs. Moijorie Thatcher and Mrs. Bea Johnson of Kaysville were joined in Europe by Mrs. Leona Clawson of Farmington for an extended tour of many of the countries. They visited in Stockholm, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, France, took the boat to Ireland, crossed the Irish Sea. Mrs. Thatcher visited a cousin in England. They also visited Scotland and Wales before returning to London and home. They visited many friends in the various countries as well as becoming acquainted with the people on the street to gain a better understanding of each of Mrs. McCormicks countrys cultures. |
