Show i v 4 MARCH 23, 1983 ! By KEITH DUNCAN so valuable to us, is his leadership. The kids know a leader when they see one and thats one reason why they elected him a team captain. Well just anticipate super things from him. Foulger says, Why not go out in style? Im planning on giving it everything Ive got. jJoumal Sports That magic and mystic that surrounds an exciting 100 meters dash is awfully difficult to ; rival. And were just around the corner from shaving several of those explosive races burst fonto the local scene. ; : THIS WEEK marks the official opening of ;the outdoor track and field season for local events prepsters. One of the always-excitin- g iand one that is hard not to keep yourfocus on is the 100 meters which will feature plenty of top talent this year. This Thursday at Davis High, the Darts will j with both Clearfield and 'be hosting a Elder to town. The meet will get coming ;Box underway at 2:20. Just the day before on Wednesday, Viewmont and Layton were to .tangle in their first meet at Layton. FOULGERS best time in the 100 last season was a 10.84 which he did in the region meet. The school record is 10.69 set by Robbie Richeson in 1977. Another valuable asset to Flints speed team happens to be the utility man in Ricky Smith. Both Smith and Foulger and the rest of the squad work hard Tuesdays and Thursdays on their sprint work while the other days are devoted to endurance work. : tri-me- et IT BECOMES very apparent when the 100 meters is getting ready to start. One of the biggest crowds of the afternoon assemble near the finish line while half that many stand a 100 meters away where the fastest men and women : of the day are getting set in their blocks, j From the moment the starting gun blasts, cheers start filling the air for a favorite runner. Some start fast and others finish strong. But only one will get the distinquished honor of being the fastest kid around. t CLEARFIELDS John Flint noted that hes always thought of the 100 meters as the glamorous event of the day. The Falcon mentor further commented that competition among Region One sprinters might be the most balanced it has ever been. Right now I dont see anyone real dominating in our region. Hopefully well rise up and grab that spot, but right now its totally up for grabs, Flint stated. TURNING TO Region Four, Davis sprinters will have to contend with the likes of View-mon- -- IT SEEMS like every year we come up with us in more than one event. Ricky is that guy this year, said Flint. Smith will follow in the line of such Clearfield utility greats as JefFNiederhauser, Steve Cash and Jimmy Phillips. Smith, a junior, is described by Flint as one of the most dedicated and hard working athletes he has ever coached. The guy has some high goals and has a great commitment to the program, said Flint. a utility person that can aid BESIDES FOULGER, Smith, Lawrence Shelton, John Bowhuis, Todd Montolvo, Bub-b- a Conley, and Jared Martin, the Falcons have to feel good with a talented sophomore group coming in led by Robert Henderson. Other sophomores that could blaze away include Jerone Wright, Greg Boyken, Rod Ruyb-a- l, Ron McDonald and Art Gardner. Dart Sprinters KAYSVILLE - The legend and records left behind by Spencer DeGraw in Davis High track and field will hardly be forgotten, especially this year. -- ts Jon Warner, probably one of the class sprinters in the entire state. The following is a breakdown of each of the sprint programs at Clearfield, Davis and Layton. Falcon Flashes CLEARFIELD -- - Coach John Flint, the veteran track coach at Clearfield High, says experience will always be the backbone of a true athletic program. THE COACH, who has led Clearfield to a posicouple of consecutive state runner-u- p all the that think to likes experience tions, Dean Foulger has had, will aid in the quest for another banner year. Foulger returns as the Falcons top sprinter this season and he himself admits experience isnt going to hurt. The Clearfield senior has been in the program since his sophomore year. AS A SOPHOMORE he ran right behind Freddie Cook and Brian Wright and posted a best time of 11.3 in the 100. He was also a member of a relay team that took second in state. Last season was very impressive.- - Foulger finished third in the region meet, made the finals in the state meet, was a member of one relay team that took second and another that took third in the state meet. DEAN WAS outstanding last year, said Hint, Hes had a slow winter so far, but hes of our by far had the most experience of any in the region. most than more had and sprinters I think Dean knows that he personally and the team collectively can have a fairly respectable year if he continues to buckle down like he has since we started outdoor. ONF OF THE IfPV thinos that makc Doan FOR THE PAST four years it was DeGraw who blazed to numerous victories in sprint dashes held all over the state. But now the Dart graduate is gone, all except for the memories and the records. Without DeGraw leading the way in Davis High sprint races, a new leader will have to emerge this spring. It could be Jeff Hammer or it might even be Kelly Ryujin or Todd Anderson. But whoever decides to fill DeGraws shoes, if thats a consider at all, the task presented wont be an easy one. IT MAY EVEN take a good year of experience and experimentation for underclassmen like Hammer, Ryujin and Anderson to bring the Dart sprint threat back to respectability. Hammer and Anderson are both juniors while Ryujin and another up and coming sprinter, Jeff Ohlwiler, are but sophomores. A TALENTED freshman that will be walking t. the halls of Davis next year will be Sean This talented ninth grade speedster should bolster the attack even further a year from now. But how about this year? Its no secret by now that the Darts are a much stronger club in the middle distance races than they are in the sprints. But can the sprint people still hold their own? Way-men- FIRST YEAR head coach, Mike Shaw, feels his sprinters can be respectable if you define the word respectable by more than just a few words. All of the kids have at least one more year of track. I think that alone will keep them excited and loose. We just hope that theyll continue to work hard and improve their times all through the year. Some of these kids have already shaved a half a second off their times of last year. That kind of improvement will be respectable. But when you stack these kids against kids like Viewmonts Warner, itll be a challenge for them. Theyre excited about running against good competition however, just so they can see where they stand. WHAT DID Hammer have to say! Im excited for track to get started. I think weve got an good team. I really believe weve nucleus of people to build something a got good much we want it, said how it matters big, just Hammer. Hammer, who is the oldest child of Bill and Sheila Hammer of Farmington, ran sprints last year for Davis. Though he didnt place in region or state, his effort in the medley relay helped that team place in region. TRACK MAY not be Hammers favorite sport, but hell love every minute of the spring. The favorite sport happens to be football where Hammer was a versatile runningback and a good reason why Davis won the region last fall. Besides running the pigskin, Hammer was also a 167 pound wrestler for Jim Dickson. Arnell Cruz making a commitment to help Jones, Laytons speed in the spring might not be forsaken afterall. Johnson, who had played soccer as a junior, had virtually no experience at all when it came to competitive high school sports. But he decided to come out for football his final year as a Lancer because as he put it, Why not come out and support the team and at the same time, leave my mark at Layton High. But they both know that since they didnt run as sophomores or juniors, experience might hurt them this year. WERE JUST hoping that theyll continue to get after it, keep training hard and continue to work on their endurance, especially Johnson since hes the smaller of the two. There is no question that Jones will be counting on both of these runners this spring, not only for their potential in the 100 and 200 meters, but in the spring relay. Last season the Lancers didnt even have a sprint relay team. JOHNSON DID just that, he came out for football. But at 9 and pushing 150 pounds, size did him an injustice in a big mans sport. And if football did him anything at all, it was the fact that Jones noticed his blaze away speed in the 40 yard dashes. Russ approached Johnson about spring track and to his pleasant surprise, Johnson had already considered it. Though the Lancer senior didnt see much action the rest of the year, he kept in close contact with Jones and was always inquisitive of what it would take to be a quality sprinter. 5-- JOHNSON claims that the coach leaves the goal setting up to each individual runner and one of his goals is to make the state qualifying in either the 100, 200 or the sprint relay. Itll be interesting to watch Arnell and Phil battle it out this year, said Jones, I think Arnell is the stronger of the two and may be our top choice in the 200. Theyll both be big keys JOHNSON, WHOSE parents moved to Utah when he was in the ninth grade, stated hes always had a knack of running fast. As a kid in the playgrounds, I cant remember anyone ever catching me, he said. According to Jones, Johnsons indoor track season was a blazing success. Though Johnson failed to get to the finals in any of the indoor meets, his .669 time in the 60 yard dash was the best among his teammates and one of the best times in the state. for us. ONE THING is for sure, that no one I know is going to dominate our region in the sprints. I think itll be one of the balanced years in the 100 and 200 weve had in quite some of time, said Jones. Other Layton sprinters that are working to get spots on the Layton team include Art Mor-ka- t, Tom Kidd, Tony Walters, Chris Sessions, Mike Baza, Chuck Hanor, Dave Kirkham, Lyle Morse, Terry Kealamakia, Robert Neil, Arb Kraisa-arSteve Estoque, James Price, Dan Steele, Keith Keller and Steve Thorpe. Cruzs best time in the winter was .691. I couldnt have asked anymore from Johnson or Cruz in indoor track, admitted Jones, spring brigade hardly knew the meaning of sprinter.
