The cream of the crop. Clearfields Craig Carter, Ricky Smith, James Moore and Duane Rock will provide much of the Falcons Strength in 84. et THE DARTS let neither the Lancers nor the Vikings intimidate them and in fact did extremely well in their first outdoor track meet of THE LANCERS really did have a pretty good day, for being so early in the season. Russ Jones, Laytons head coach, was pleased himself and said, The kids were high and did pretty good for it being as cold as it was. They the year. This is Shaws second year with the Davis team and not many coaches around the area beat him in intensity and effort. His efforts appear to be making a mark. were really excited about beating Viewmont, we havent done that for a long time around here. Dave Brimhall had an impressive throw of in the shot put, which won that event for his school. Week in and week out, Brimhall is improving in the shot and by seasons end could be the guy who is standing on the first place platform at the state meet. '2 LAYTONS LEON Comaby surprised a lot Sophomore Craig Carter twirls in discus as lie won the event over his teammates and from Bountiful and Mountain Crest. of people by winning the pole vault with a leap of 12 feet. Leon is going to get even better, said Jones, I know he was excited about that. Comaby jumped just 10 feet 6 inches last year as a junior, but has made tremendous improvements this year. com-petito- rs " IF, YOU like track, then meets like the one Friday would be a lot to please a guy. There wasnt any blowouts and by the indication of the final score, Viewmont, Layton and us were very evenly matched. I was very pleased with Jeff Ohlwiler in his javelin performance. Hes only a junior and were excited about his next couple of years representing Davis High School. He threw for over 170 feet in last Fridays meet and in practice has distanced over 175. With the new javelin he should be up to around 190, maybe 200 before the end of the year. Last year at this time he was only at 150 feet. THE KID is also going to be a force to be reckoned with at the BYU Invitational De-- ., cathalon. I wouldnt be surprised if he were to win it all this year, even as a junior. In our time trials, hes done all the events except for three in two days. His performance in those seven events put him on the pace of getting 6400 to 6500 points. Last year the winning score in the decathalon was about 6200 points. In the past 10 years that the decathalon has been held, only Keith Robinson has scored over 7000 points, which was a new national record. TOM KIDD won the long jump event with a leap of 21 feet and 3 inches. With continual improvement, Kidd could do well in state in that event. Layton went second and third in the javelin event. Dave Totaro threw over 158 feet and Ronnie Pearce was third with a throw of 152 feet. . PAUL ROBERTS did fairly well in the discus with a throw over 112 feet. In the running events, Terry Kealamakia placed third in the high hurdles behind Davis Jeff Singley and Viewmont's Troy Hanks. BUT LAYTON came back to do well in the intermediate hurdles, as Kealamakia placed first, Kidd was second and Darrell Martin was fourth. In the 100 meters, Laytons Darryl Lacey placed second and Tony Walters was third. In the 200 meters it was a reverse with Walters getting second and Lacey placing third. RICH ELMORE, s junior, placed third in lhe 1600 meters and third in the 3200 meters. Both of the events Rich put his best times of the year on the board. In the relays, Laytons sprint and mile relays were second behind Viewmont while Laytons medley relay team won it. The Lancer medley is composed to far of Totcro, John W'agstafT, Lyle Morris and Tom Allen being the anchor. LAYTON TRAVELS to take on the Weber Warriors this week in their Region One dial meet. I was tickled, said Jones, The kids were really excelling for this early in the year., et JEFF HAS long jumped 21 feet and 6 inches, he has run the 100 meters in 1 1.5 and has a bunch of other good times and distances. If he doesn't win it this year, hell for sure be a force as a senior. Davis Jeff Singley, just coming off an injury, finished second to Viewmonts Troy Hanks in the high hurdles. Both Hanks and Singley finished with times of less than 15.4, w hich is an impressive clocking for this early in the year. Shaw believes that if Singley continues to improve, hell rank himself as one of the top hurdlers in the state, along with Hanks. It w as the first full flight of hurdles that Singley has run all year. ERIC THOMPSON had a throw of 146 feet and 7 inches to win the discus event. The Davis High juniors throw would have placed third in state last season. Morgan Nelson, despite a hurt foot, won the high jump with a leap of 6-4. This Friday, both Carter and Thurgood will have a chance to redeem themselves in the shot as Clearfield hosts Box Elder in their first Region One dual of the year. The meet gets started at 3 p m. I BFUEAE that Cra'g has things in perspective.' said Flint about his talented sophomore, He has a lot of lofty goals which he'll meet because of his intensity and the drive that comes out of that family. We haven't haj an athlete like Craig on our team yet, a guy that utilizes his quickness so well for being a gay who can do sow ell in the shot and discus. As far a running in the I ft) meters, weU jyit to wait and see how Craig develops in the dual meets. As far as being competitive in the If1 on a state lev el. he isn't very c!oe. It may be that we'll just use him in the relay s and let him really get his focus going on the field events. And a kit of it depends on how the other kids come along in the other events. IN OTHER Ckarficld track new s, the javelin event is shaping up a little better this year for Clearfield. Yorg Fikes had a throw of 163 feet and still really doesn't have his form down yet. Sterling Allen also did well there. Ckarfield's distance people continued to im prove, even though they'll continually run up against a highly touted Region One distance crew. Mint say s his distance nucleus might be the best he's had in yean, but isn't excited about what the rest of the region has. THE FALCONS have continually been one of the state's quality relay schools, but Mint says he isn't happy yet with his team's progress in the three relays. MEW MONT had seven firsts, but Davis won the meet with 11 second place finishes. The other second place finishes included Matt Kimball in the 1600 and 3200 meters, Mark Guniy, a second in the 400 meters, Joe Haw-kin- s in the 800 meters, second in the medley relay, Thompson second in the shot put. Matt Bailey a second in the discus. Nelson a second in the long jump and Greg Willard a second in the high jump. Perhaps the Darts could have done even a little better had Todd Anderson been in town. Todd is one of our better runners. With him we could have done just a little better in the sprints," said Shaw. WE RE GOING to be more competitive this year, than last, Mid Shaw, As long as we stay healthy. The Darts ill open their dual meet schedule for Region Four this W ednesday against the Bountiful Braves. Track This Week Layton at Weber Davis at Bountiful Box Elder at Clearfield tt |
