Show 19S4 Form and Garden Edition Massangar-Entarprix- W ildlif e Resources offers lifetime licenses Pesticides necessary, but use judiciously by Howard Deer, Extension Pesticide Specialist, Utah State University Pesticides are essential to our way of life. However, most pesticides are toxic and therefore need to be used judiciously and properly so hazards are kept to a minimum. Pesticides have significant impact on modern agriculture, health protection, and our way of life. They are necessary in ail apsects of food production and distribution including seed protection, plant and animal production, protection, transportation, post-harve- st and prevention of loss in wholesale and retail distribution. Pesticides are necessary in disease control and sanitation programs. They protect personal property, businesses and help to maintain our standard of living. Without pesticides, we would see a gloomy picture of modem life. Food and fiber losses to pests would exceed their present 30 percent. The Division of Wildlife Resources now offers a license which will provide outdoor enthusiasts Food costs would increase above 8 percent of personal income. Communicable diseases of man and animals, such as todays approximate typhus would increase because of reduced vector control. Reduced levels of preservation and sanitation would allow increased microbial disease transmission and contamination. Losses to wood and property by destructive pests such as termites and rats would increase. All peoples of Utah and the United States would be impacted through increased living costs and decreased living standards. The U.S. and the State Departments of Agriculture and the Land Grant Universities such as Utah State University have respon- efficient to maintain production of food and fiber while protecting human and animal health and the environment. Pesticides carefully and judiciously used play a vital role in fulfilling this responsibility. The good managers will make out all right if they have kept their debt load under control. The farmers who are weathering the economy at the present are those who have kept their debts down to a minimum. They may not run the best operations, but what they take in is total has taken Pay says the DWR applications will be accepted at the Salt Lake office only, 1596 West North Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84116.
