Show 19S4 Farm and Cardan Edition Mstngr-Entrprls- The incredible Sanpete farmer produces food and fiber for many by May Peterson ASCS staff A national program available only Agriculture is a major source Of income in Sanpete County. Few county residents fully understand the role which it Alls in our lives in this peaceful little valley. It is a beautiful place to live and to raise our families, however, do we realize that from these fields and the livestock raised here, we hope to get the food and fiber for our survival? Its a tricky business, this agriculture. No other business is faced with so many uncontrollable factors which affect its success. On the other hand, nowhere is its success more heavily relied upon for our health and sustenance. Truly, each of us has a vital stake in making agriculture survive and succeed. Some of our tax dollars are committed to help agriculture stay in business, if not prosper. Last spring high water was responsible for much damage throughout our county. We are well aware of the problems and damage caused within cities and on the roads. Much less known and understood was the damage to the farming lands. Farmers, already hard pressed financially, looked at the damages to their farm land almost in despair. How could they possibly get this land to produce food and fiber? It would take money, lots of money, that the farmers just did not have. ' Federal and state emergency programs were on hand to promise help to cities and towns, and eventually, some help came also to the farmer. It . came in the form of the Emergency Conservation Program and was limited in scope. It did not help with all the kinds of help that were needed, but it was a help, and the farmers used it. Later other federal and state help also came with limitations on its use. Many of the farm projects aided by federal funds have been completed; others, after almost a years time, are still not finished. There are others still under water with little hope for drying out this spring. The fanner has not yet survived the Hooding, but there is some hope and eticouragement in overcoming this obstacle. to proagricultural producers vides American taxpayers with an opportunity to help the farmer conserve and preserve this resource so that it will be able to produce food many years from now. We share with the farmers the cost of projects which otherwise could not be done. We see some of these projects in action in Sanpete. They include pipelines for sprinkler irrigation, ponds, removing juniper and reseeding, better fences on pasture and rangeland, and stream protection. They represent some of the work which is being done to conserve and preserve the farming resource. . Wool and Lambs Wool is an agricultural product which is important in Sanpete County and is deemed to be an essential item nationally. Tourists passing through the county can often be seen taking pictures of sheep as they move along the highway to mountain ranges in the spring or on their return b the fall. This sight is common to us, but to many people it is a rare sight. Yes, the sheep business b Sanpete is a big busbess. Herd sizes vary from just a few kept on the farm or home lot, to large flocks with two to three thousand head in a flock. Wool provides us with clothing of various kinds, blankets, and many other useful items. We do not raise enough wool for our needs nationally and an incentive program is available which encourages producers to raise more and better quality wool. About 340 producers in Sanpete filed their bills of sale for wool and unshorn lambs with ASCS with their applications for incentive payments b 1983. In March of 1984, these applications, together with others throughout the nation, were compiled to determine the average price nationally. It was determined to be 61.3 cents per pound of wool. The bcentive level for 1983 was set at S1.53 per pound and this meant that 149.6 of the amount the .. - producer received for his wool would be the additional payment the farmer receives as an incentive This added payment Emergencies such as flooding and payment. for wool up to the the brings price weather-related other problems are not the only uncertainties in level that was set nationally and rewards the farmer who produced farming. Up to date information, applications, and professional assistance is available on farm programs which include wheat and feed grains, commodity loans, honey, milk indemnity, diversion, refunds, and facility loans. of the Sanpete About farmers raise grains and follow closely programs which provide for reduced plantings to comply with nationally determined needs in compenreturn for sation. It is costly to set aside productive land and program provisions change from year to year. At the ASCS office these provisions are interpreted and discussed with each farmer in view of his farming operation. The farmer then determines whether or not to participate in this program for the year. If he chooses to participate, the application is filed and the farm is monitored to make sure that the farmer plants within the limitations and sets aside into conserving use the required number of acres and that it is properly cared for. In recent years this compliance work has been done by aerial photography. Recently, dairy farmers voiced support for a government controlled program to reduce production of milk and milk products. This program is also administered by ASCS and in Sanpete the participation is above the national average. w 9vugaiit Thursday, May 3, 1984 Dt' SprfM Oi S,1dS5S which we are totally dependent for our survival. one-thir- , Salina, Utah Richfield m often-ignore- Country Collectibles Now opening for their new season on May 26.
