Loco weed causes congestive heart failure in range calves Researchers at Utah State University have concluded that locoweed, Oiytropla aerlcea, can predispose cattle, especially calves, failure, a to congestive right-heaMountain called High syndrome Disease. Humber & rJlGotfernaQs $3.90 rt Ranchers have felt that a relationship might exist between the locoweed infesting their ranges at elevations from 7,000 to 10,000 feet and the congestive right-heafailure. After one rancher controlled the locoweed on his range with herbicides, his cattle had no more failure. problems with right-hea- 50 lb. Lynn F. James, Kip E. Panterand Darwin B. Nielsen tested this idea by feeding green locoweed to cow-capairs placed at approximately 9,000 feet elevation. Twelve of thirteen calves fed the locoweed developed the congestive right-heafailure, while other calves not fed locoweed did not, develop the problem. Calves at a much lower elevation, 4,500 feet, fed locoweed did not develop the failure condition. right-healf rt V4"x20f Rebar 5'xl50' The researchers note that all affected calves did not respond in the accumulation of fluid under the jaw and brisket area. Others dehydrated and a few swelled along the side of the jaws so the hair stood straight out. All had diarrhea, became depressed and developed dull hair and eyes. All appeared the same internally on postmortem examination. They had microscopic lesions of both locoweed poisoning and congestive right-heafailure. The researchers note that severely ill calves that are removed from locoweed areas and the high elevation generally recover. rt I"x20' Class 200 Remesh "x20' 50 94 lb. Bag Cement Tj rt 90 lb.
