Dec 6.9 The Turkey Story ByiJean Cluff and Jamie Leslie You have all been told of the first Thanksgiving, and how the turkey has been the main dish of dinner since the beginning. Wc can no longer keep the secret hidden deep inside, so vve thought that wc would let you in on it - the story that you have all been told is false. It all started out when the pilgrims landed at Plymouth. They knew little about how to survive in a land like that. With the help of the Native Americans, they were able to adapt to their new home. To show their gratitude for everything that they were given, the pilgrims wanted to have a great feast and invite the Indian Chief and his people. They wanted the dinner to be extra special, with something that they could not have every' day. A challenge was made for every one to find the most exotic of the foods. The men went out in search of the perfect centerpiece for the meal. The men returned from the vast wilderness seeking recognition for the treasures they had found, hoping that it would be chosen as the dinners main dish. Men brought things like; turnips, sugar cane, pies, turkeys, deer, and many other savory foods. A contest was held afterwards to decide on what would be the best choice. It was a hard decision at first but the pilgrims noticed how attractive the turnip had looked. The judges took a bite and loved the taste It was one of the most sensational thing they had ever tasted Hie man was awarded, and the main dish was going to be the now famous turnip. The huge feast was going to be in just 2 days, so the pilgrims rushed along and didn't even notice that the turkey had just gobbled up the tumup. So with much frustration the pilgrims killed the turkey. They cut open his stomach to find the turnip, and nothing had been found. So in order to get just a taste of the turnip they roasted the turkey and made it the main dish. The Indians ended up enjoying the meat so much that they have made a tradition of having a harvest each year, and that's why vve have turkey for the main dish every Thanksgiving. |
