Whetherit’s a casual glance at a herd of deer browsing on the thin pickings of winter or a full-blown expedition to study the habits of the sandhill crane, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has estimated that upwards of 90 percent of Utahns say they enjoy watching wildlife on occasion. Northern Utah is blessed with an abundance of wildlife, and refuges on the east shore of the Great Salt Lake. “All our waterfowl areas are closed to vehicles, but foot traffic is allowed,” she said. “Ogden Bay, Howard Slough and Farmington Bay are probably the most exciting; on those three alone, you could spend the rest of your life and not seeit all.” White said migrations of shorebirds are just past the peak season, but there are still 50 or 60 different species on the Great Salt Lake’s east shore. That’s not including large numbers of ducks and Canada-geese. The waterfowl are now busy bringing up broods observeit. of young birds, she said.
