The announcement soothed worries of conflict between the ruling Cambodian People’s Party and the FUNCINPECopposition party, vhich has a virtually insurmount- able lead in ballot-counting from last week’s election. Sihanouk, 72, has served as king, president and father figure in Cambodia for half a century. He is the only leader acceptable to all the country’s factions. The government issued statement supporting Sihanouk’s government and urging soldiers and citizens to accept the change. Government spokesman Khieu Kanharith, whoearlier warned that soldiers might riot upon hearing the election results, said the new government was formed “to ensure the social order.” Sihanouk said in a statement he was immediately assuming the post of prime minister and commander in chief of the armed forces. The vice prime ministers are Hun Sen, currently prime minister, and Prince Norodom Ranariddh, who is Sihanouk’s son and the head of FUNCINPEC. Sihanouk called for national rec- Onciliation and said he would continue to seek peace with Khmer Rouge guerrillas, which boycotted the election.
