Both teams fought through the state quarter-final- s and semi-final- s and will play for all the marbles at Rice Stadium. Roy 10 Hillcrest 7 The Royals stumbled all over themselves in the opening minutes of last Fridays game. They spotted the Huskies one cheap touchdown, only five minutes into the first quarter, and didnt see daylight until only eight seconds remained to be played in the third quarter. Roy mounted a great second half defensive and offensive effort that put the Huskies out of business. Roy had won the toss of the coin as for two yards, but on the very next play, the ball game started, had elected to the unthinkable happened. Jacklin receive, and then almost broke the dropped back to pass, under heavy opening kickoff for a touchdown. Deep pressure from defensive end Mark receiver, Troy Thompson had taken the Redmon of Hillcrest. Redmon got a ball on his own ten yard line, faked a hand in front of the ball, tipped it into reverse to Brad McCaulley, and then the air, and gathered it in for a Husky streaked behind a wall of Royal interception. Hillcrest needed only four defenders, down the sideline. The last plays to get on the scoreboard, on a Husky defender eluded a Roy blocker, perfect pass from Jeff Wilcox to Mark the man who had made the and tackled Thompson on the 30 yard Redmon line. The Royals had been in great field interception. Beating Bonneville was easily the biggest win we had all year, said Royal coach Ernest Jacklin. It was a major turning point in our season because team confidence and showed them how good they were. Jacklin says he knew his team was a lot better than last year mainly because the junior varsity team had done well and most of those players came up for this year. But he didnt really know the potential of his team until the first game with arch rival Bountiful which Roy won 13-We decided to change our defense from last year to a straight pro set with four down linemen and three linebackers, said Jacklin referring to how he started the season. Teams were scoring too easily on us last year and we needed more control. When we beat Bountiful, the 3A champion from last year, I knew we had good potential. Fridays contest will mark the first time in history that two Weber County Schools will play for the title. Bonneville comes in with a 10-- 1 record and tournament victories over Olympus and Granite. Roy follows with a 2 record and has tournament wins over East and Hillcrest. No one is picking a clear favorite, but most think an overtime period will decide the outcome. Jacklin says the key to the game will lie in the defense and which team controls the other best. Jacklin also says field position will play an important role in the outcome. We have to concentrate on putting them on their side of the field and keeping them there, said Jacklin. We also cant spend the whole day punting out of own back door. We have to establish that part of the game early. With the game only hours away, there is not much else the coaches can do or say to prepare their teams. And with that, heres how they I ! VI'' off-mar- k. first-and-go- al out-play- 4-- A ' p ace-kick- By PHIL KIRKWOOD Sports Editor ! At the start of this years prep football season, no one gave the teams from Region 1 much of a chance to take state. At the time it was well known that Brighton, Hillcrest, Skyline and East were the teams to beat because they were all boasting virtually the same teams from a year before. But now, just hours before the final game, not one of the above mentioned remains and instead two from Region 1, count em two teams Roy and Bonneville, will play for the state Championship Friday noon at Rice Stadium. And of all the teams in Region 1, positively no one expected the Royals to be playing for the top spot. After all, they didnt exactly burn up the field last year by posting only two wins and losing every Region contest. The best the Royals were predicted to do was third place and a very outside chance of even making the tournament, let alone winning it. ; Bonneville, on the other hand, was the favorite choice to take Region 1 and take soundly. And after being ranked number one in the state polls for nearly half the season, most considered the Lakers a bona fide contender to play for the title when the tournament began. Ironically enough, the only team to beat the Lakers all season was Roy and the Royals did it on Laker turf. That contest decided the Region . crown and automatically put both teams in the : quarter-final- was loping at full speed on a big gainer into Husky territory, but fumbled, when he was tackled, and Hillcrest had possession again at its own 43 yard line. The Royals held once more and Hillcrest punted; this time to the 21 yard line. Jacklin moved his team down field, but Hillcrest stopped them at. its 23 yard line. On fourth and long, Graham MacFarlane took a shot at a 35 yard field goal, but the kick was In the second quarter, the Royals mounted a drive at its own 20 yard line that carried to the Hillcrest three-yar- d line, where MacFarlane chipped in a 20 yard field .goal. A stubborn Husky defense- - had stopped the Royals, who had a at the three yard line, but Roy did get points on the board. The Royal crowd had voiced its displeasure when Coach Jacklin called for a field goal, so close to the Hillcrest goal, but those three points proved to be the undoing of the Hillcrest team. Halftime Strategy Coach Ernie Jacklin made some profound statements in the halftime locker room that led to a second-hal- f rejuvination and a Royal victory. He, Jacklin, had watched his Royals, the ball three times in their cough-u- p first four plays from scrimmage, and his had missed on a 35 yard field goal. We them in the first half, stressed Coach Jacklin, yet we of the score are on the short-en- d because of our own errors. Lets make a pledge to pull together and go home happy, he challenged, and the locker room came alive. The coach was concerned about Hillcrest running back Eric Voroz, who weighs only 160 pounds, but is lightning quick and has moves like a cat. Come to balance on him, said the coach, make him dance, and then nail him. The coach also exhorted his Royals to play with sound thinking, instead of emotion, and then he sent them roaring back to the battle. The Royals did as their coach had asked, and in the second half, did not allow Hillcrest to go beyond the midstripe mark. They kept the Huskies contained deep in their own territory, and from the Hillcrest 37 yard line, used ten plays to score the winning touchdown. Jacklin scored on a quarterback sneak, with eight seconds left on the third quarter clock. The game from that point was one of ball control, but it was played for the greater part, at the Husky end of the field. There were a lot of heroics in Fridays game. Graham MacFarlane not only kicked a field goal, and an extra point, after the Roy touchdown, but he also booted two of Roys kickoffs into the end zone, out of the reach of Hillcrests running threat, Eric Voroz. . Roys defensive line was awesome. The two Down tackles, Bill Venstra and Stewart Mclnnes were credited with nine and eight tackles respectively. Todd Taylor, an outside linebacker, made eight tackles, middle linebacker Jay Winward made seven and recovered a fumble, and Kenny Tulane, from his outside linebacker ROY COACH Ernest Jacklin ponders his next move against Hillcrest. QUARTERBACK first down. Wade Jacklin takes off again at full speed for another Royal spot, got six tackles. Free safety, Gary Anderson and strong safety, Paul Duke had six and five tackles for the game. Brad McCaulley, from his corner-bac- k position, was credited with one tackle, and made an interception. Ray Sanchez played both ways for Roy and was also on the specialty team. Tom Nigon, playing in place of his injured brother John, filled in without a hitch. Tom, like Mclnnes is only a sophomore. On the offensive team, Ron Halbert handled the snapping chores with a lot of authority. He capably handled the Hillcrest Nose Guard who is touted to be the best of the Huskies. Darren Story, left guard, and Larry Green were high on the list for praise from the Roy coaches. Offensive tackle John Chevalier, playing with Sanchez, had a stellar performance, Bart Hadley, from his tight end spot, caught five passes for Still Photo Bjr Doa Miller 106 yards. On the other end, wide receiver Brad McCaulley played both offensive and defensive, did Roy punting, intercepted one pass, and caught three of Jacklins passes. Kenny Tulane and Paul Hansen played out- standing. The biggest defensive play of the game happened in the final two minutes of play. Hillcrest, on fourth down, and less than a yard to go, needed a first down to keep its desperation drive going. The Huskies hit the center of the line, and the Royal defenders stopped them for a loss. Roy then took over the ball and wisely ran the clock out. Wade Jacklin completed 18 of 32 passes for 252 yards. He had one interception. Tailback Ken Huddleston picked up 47 yards in nine rushes.
